pix within the ten foot rule

in another post ... we discussed the ten foot rule.. and the FAQ's in that regard .... i noted i didn't like either definition .... though i appreciate the effort ....

to stimulate the forum .. and to define 'the ten foot rule' ... lets post some pix of hosta you consider worthy of fitting into the category .... here is my proposed definition of the ten foot rule ... if you care to debate this .. feel free:

THE RULE: a hosta that any basic collector can name from ten feet away .. no matter whose garden .... no matter what region of the country or what ever country ..... e.g sum and substance.... its a giant... that grows like a weed, with a unique color ... and frankly ... anyone who owns it can ID it anywhere in the world ... no need to ask the owner.. no need to vein count.. no concern over flower color ... period... YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS from at least ten feet away ... IN THEORY .... there can NOT be a 'look alike' for a ten foot hosta .... that would be contrary to the whole point .....

IN THEORY .... if you only had enough garden for a few plants.. they should all be ten footers.. why waste space on the ordinary .. when you can have the extraordinary?????

Krossa Regal and Montana Aureomarginata fit this category. Pic is a couple years old, kinda blurry. I have a better camera now. lol

Perfect, absolutely perfect... Jane, yes...that's the house and thankyou so much for the pictures of it..it's one of the chosen places I really want to see in person, if the day comes I jump aboard the clipper.. Kathy and Kathy....both are excellent... if I wasn't so adamant about gardening, with actual dirt and plants, I would love to fill my yard with this same kind of yard art but that never was the goal of what's transpired with my battle with the gestapo guy... I always had tripling up the garden space, with whimsical things added all around..but it's been an uphill fight, for months with the next door neighbors and for the life of me, I don't know why they don't just get a life and leave me alone.. before they had the fence built, I could understand them not liking the pile of junk I had on the side of the house..that was acceptable..I mean acceptable that they didn't like it all.. but after the fence was built, they just didn't let up. the day the survey was finished and I had a copy of it all in my possession, I was like given a second chance at life itself.. you know when you're in a restaurant and by chance you end up at a table, where the noisiest people in the world seem to gather..not just a couple but an entire extended family and they talk a mile a minute, top of their lungs and you wonder if they will EVER shut up or EVER leave... then, they finally finish and leave the place.. you sit back and are so tired from them all, that you just sigh a sigh of relief... or if you're out camping..in the quiet, in the woods..and some idiot cranks up the car radio, or battery operated radio, with music you detest....and they have a 'good ol' boy' party, bbq... drinking...then arguing, then either the cops are called or they finally pass out, till morning, when they start it all over again.....finally, camping is over and you go home, exhausted.... well, having the survey papers confirming my thoughts that the fence was on my side of the property.... that was the same kind of 'silver lining' in the clouds that came over me.. I could think straight, I could sleep at night, I could feel comfortable in knowing my boundries, both realistically and figuratively.. it was awesome... now, since we've gotten rid of what I believe were the points of concern...solid waste..(appliances that showed, since the carport fell down from snow) and the bags of coffee grounds and other misc...I don't think there's any reason for me to concentrate on anything other than my gardening in potted plants and raised beds, with the other garden junk art that I had planned. if he has a problem with any more, I will take it up with the county and file harassment charges. it's just gotta stop somewhere. and....I will have more than one person here, in my defense, to walk around, while 'gestapo guy' does the same. I have 30 different emails I've sent to myself, from google, emails and posted pictures on here and other albums some of you have in your own folders... there must be no less than at least a hundred photos... all of them too cool to single any out.. thankyou to any and all of you, who have contributed to this cause..I appreciate it so much. and sure wish you could all converge in my yard, the day he shows up...lol sincerely, Becky .(*_*).

not at all kit ... but a few more facts might get you a better answer .. how wet.. how long into season ... how big a berm .. etc ... i think berm sums it up.. you see them everywhere ... the key is.. roots need air as much as water ... and by raising the planting.. you give the transplant time to get over transplant stresses.. and put it roots where it can cope with the surrounding issues .... and.. if you are talking about a week or two of seasonal water.. i bet the tree can get over it .. ken

Having had a new home built in the last seven years, a custom home was quoted at over $200.00 a square foot. We did a lot of work ourselves and hired our own subs. Moving back to Florida, we bought a foreclosure that was built in 2002 with over 3100 sq. ft. with an additional 1000+ sq. ft. for an indoor pool, surrounded by 9 sliding glass doors. The entire home is built of stuccoed cement block with tiled roofs. wait for it....for $225,000 in a gated community. Then we redid most of the house ourselves with hired subs. It took us a long time to find, but existing houses will give you a much better deal. Please don't let your home put you into financial difficulty. Do you have a large savings for emergencies, college funds for your children, 401k plans at work that you are active in or an IRA? The best gift you can give yourself is peace of mind. I have not had a mortgage for many years (20) and am 62 and retired. My daughter lost her beautiful dream house that she just had to have, and ended up divorced. Just a reality check.

I don't know about anyone else, but I can spot Elegans (or sieboldiana whichever is most correct) from 50 feet away.

Plain old Undulata is another classic that I think meets the ten+ foot rule.

They were so obvious to me, I thought everyone would get it. But maybe that's because I don't have Delta Dawn, Shade Fanfare, Lady Isobelle Barnett. I do have Sea Dream, but mine looks nothing like Fragrant Bouquet. Hope I don't have a bad Sea Dream!

Your pictures are all beautiful. I do not know if it is because space is not my issue or if it is because money is, but my take on the 10 foot rule is: My garden looks amazing from the road. It is when you get up close you see my garden is just repeated ordinary types of differing size and age. I do have one or two surprises in among the commons, however.

I wouldn't know either. I don't know how big Gunther's Prize but Hideko's Blizzard must be 40" tall or more. It's HUGE!

bunny ... you need another hobby if you are keeping track of my frosts.. lol ...

BUTFW has good years.. and bad years.. and once in a blue moon .. great years.. no one would ever believe such without the digital ... lol ...

but mine is planted... to the north of a tree... so it is very late to come up .. MOST YEARS .... so as to avoid as many spring problems as possible ... it wasn't that bad last year .... but i found the 2005 picture first ... go figure....

the devon green is a nice plant .. that has about 6 names... canadian shield .. DG .... etc.. isn't it the all green June or something like that ... EVERY tc lab of the great mom .. registered the all green TC .... what a nightmare.. i think i bought 4 of them under different names before i was informed .... or i am mistaken .. lol ... it is unique for sure.. but might not be a ten footer if i am right about the name problem ... but who cares... the pix are just great this time of year.. so thanks, regardless ... anyone care to correct me or add to the name game???

I've never seen Leading Lady but it definitely does look just like LIB and Bottom Line!

I can personally ID Guacamole from 20 feet away. Don't have time to dig up a pic right now - check out the hosta library lol

I have LIB and also have bottom line. the funny thing is that they are planted about 3 feet from each other. WOW, that is going to be great variety, eh? LOL

Thanks for the additional info for my look-a-likes list Ken. I started the list based on forum discussions - perhaps there is an official list out there. I'm sure I am not even close to identifying them all; however the list is growing...

The question...if there is a look-a-like, can it legitimately qualify under the 10 foot rule?

Revolution and Clifford's Comet are look alikes...however, since you can't distinguish one from the other neither qualifies under the ten foot rule? Just checking.

I love Warwick Comet, it visually pops out and catches your attention. I'd say it qualifies for the 10 foot rule.

first in time has to be the 10 footer.. and is usually the cheaper, older plant...

ergo ..... revolution is a must have ... and a 10 footer.. the other [who shall no longer be named] .. is the pretender to the crown ...

don't even get me going on okey dokey [or okeefenokee]( i cant keep them straight this time of year ) .. both benedict plants from decades ago .... one of which looks just like gold standard ... thing is.. herb never sold a plant... gave them all away .... and most of his plants didnt come to market until after his death .... and banyai found GS in the 80's i think .. i would bet they are the same.... but herb sure had great names.. lol .. the point.. if i have one ..... GS is still a 10 footer ....

I'm so glad I got "Manhattan" last Spring! I can't wait to see it mature, along with "Mississippi Delta".
I'm finding I'm becoming a real fan of "olga's" efforts!
