* Pesty- Cat HELP!!!**

I have my neigbors cat come over and crap in my garden! Any Ideas on how to deter that pesty critter.

Thanks what could I put in there ? to keep him out!!!

Besides a Bear trap?

I read this little test. They said that moth balls and garlic cloves worked. I am a little surprised that the garlic worked. I even grow garlic in my garden. My cats loved garlic powder. It used to be in a product that is still on the market. Unfortunately, garlic is toxic to cats and dogs.

Nah, don't use moth balls. They are toxic. Instead try this, citrus peels of all kinds -- lemon, lime, grapefruit. Kitties hate citrus. Also, get some really, really prickly rose vines to lay down thither and yon. Kitties don't like prickly either!

If you'd include your location or at least your garden zone it would help as many pests are strictly regional and most live in cycles that are tied to climate. Also any other info you can provide. For example it is apparently one of the species called leaf-footed bugs but there are hundreds of them. The Family Coreidae has over 1800 members. The group includes common boxelder bugs and squash bugs, but in most parts of the country it is far too early for them to have emerged. Dave Here is a link that might be useful: Coreidae bug images

Hello Shenue, The most common gnat problems I'm aware of are soil gnats (some call them fungus gnats). By either name, the treatment is the same. Cut down on the frequency of watering so that the soil surface dries out between waterings. This was mentioned by previous posters but I felt it was important to reiterate it. Changing your watering habits "will not" stop the larva that are already in the soil from hatching, so you will still see adult gnats for a while. Once the cycle has been broken and suitable conditions are no longer present, you'll see a noticable decline in adult gnat numbers until they've finally just disappeared. Your plant should also start to show some vigor too... as typically the same conditions that are beneficial to gnats are detrimental to plants. I wouldn't recommend fertilizing for a while until your plant has grown some new roots and shown outward signs of new growth and I definately wouldn't recommend putting it through the shock of transplanting it while it's in a weakened state. If the gnats bother you such that you can't wait for the new watering schedule to fix the situation, about the only thing you can do is spray the soil surface and the flying insects with an appropriate spray. No point in spraying the plant itself as the gnats are interested in the soil. Regards, Dan

Bamboo is a heavy self mulcher, more than any tree. The culm sheaths and leaves pile up a little higher each year under the bamboo. So I'm not sure a chipper would be necessary, and the culms themselves might be a little problem in a chipper, because of it's high silicone content. I have an excess of organic material each year due to the remarkable carbon seqestration of the plant. I give away the culms to artists and craftsmen, or pile it up in a woooded area to let it slowly rot when I clear out old, smaller diameter, or dead culms. About one fourth of the grove is removed each year. This makes it pleasant to walk through. When bamboo flowers every twenty to one hundred and fifty years, instead of producing viable seed, it often dies out and if it doesn't, it is severely set back for several years. There is no case in one hundred and thirty years in this country, in fact, where it has spread by seed, and and that's over a hundred different species. It's been cultivated so long, it's lost it's ability to spread by seed, at least in the U.S., and it's easier to propagate it vegetatively, though one can order seed it's not legal to import seed so I don't, and it's tricky starting out with seed anyway. Bamboo doesn't march on forever, unless it's in an artificial environment where trees are intentionally limited, and lawns are created, such as in the city. It outcompetes lawns, being that it's a grass that grows tall. There is a forty year old grove nearby that has spread one quarter of an acre, since it competes for sunlight, it's stopped it's "march", and has settled in and become a part of the "ecology". The rhizomes that peter out are tremendous soil builders, the microflora benefit from the high carbohydrate content, lots of sugars and starch. You can take a poor soil and make it great, simply by planting bamboo and wiping it out later as described earlier. Like no other plant including nitrogen fixing legumes. It has no allelopathic properties, and trees and bamboo get along well and can mutually benefit each other. The tree supplies some shade, the bamboo supplies mulch for the tree. It is a symbiotic, rather than a parasitical, relationship. It's a forest plant for heavens's sake, it's in the plant's interests not to destroy it's natrual environment.

These people appear to be neighbors, but not friends. Just be pleasant, do not invite them in, or let them use your phone etc. Just tell them due to personal reasons you cannot let people into your home at this time. No reason to give. Get caller ID, and not answer the phone. If they anything, just smile and say you are unable to visit at this time.

I thought of a few things while I waited too. pine needles,
they are a little sappy and sticky and prckly figured that might annoy him. I also laid a few small mice traps underneath like little land mines HE HE!!
thanks for the Great Info! I think moth balls are good for mice in non gardening areas.
I like the citrus idea!!!

I sure hope you are kidding about the mice traps! That is a bit cruel of a deterrent! Besides that, you might find yourself in trouble gardening if you get just a little forgetful!!!

My cat slept in the pines, making beds on the stuff that built up over the years. The needles don't seem to deter cats at all unless perhaps you can get them to stick upwards?

I have often wondered about the information about repelling cats with citrus. Cats don't like to eat citrus. I never noticed them leaving the room when I ate an orange or grapefruit though. They just don't like the way it tastes. I am not sure they will stay away just because something smells like citrus. Supposedly spraying the base of the soil and plants with a potion make with hot peppers will be unpleasant to their paws. http://www.helium.com/tm/487346/regarding-felines-gardeners-sides I don't know anyone who has actually done this though.

It all comes down to poop fighting. I was emotionally involved with my little fighter.

I used to have gardening fights with my own beloved cat. I would go out to garden, he would join me. I would walk to the gardens, he would be at my side. I would dig. He would dig and poop. "THAT IS GOING TOO FAR!" I would say. He always had one area that he would dig up. The only way I could stop the little pansy pooper was to keep the garden densely planted enough that it would not be so lovely to dig in. All that loose, black soil, fluffy and soft to the touch is just too much to resist. THAT IS JUST BEAUTIFUL!

I lost the little guy this year and have taken complete control of my garden again. Of course, I would gladly go back to the poop fights if I could. I miss him.

What worked for me was crushed red pepper, the kind you buy in the spice section of the supermarket. I sprinkled it around the garden when I lived in Brooklyn NY, it kept the cats and dogs out. I had to reapply a few times but they finally stopped showing up. I even used cayanne powder one season. Of course now that I live in an area with what seems like millions of squirrels and chipmonks I kind of encourage the neighborhood kitty's to visit.

A dog or a Supersoaker squirtgun. Or the garden hose.

My cats go outdoors and all our neighbors know them. They also know it's OK to give 'em a blast when they're where they shouldn't be. For the most part, though, they're pretty content to remain on our property.

Thanks I have a dog! HE stays on the deck and is not in the front yard on 24 HOUR alert, for when the neighbors cat come a calling at very sly moments of day or eve!
And same goes for the Home-owner. He doesn't stand around all day waiting to be Johnny on the spot with the hose.
I do have some better things to do with my time than be the neighborhood "CAT Nazi Patrolman"
So far the alternate methods seem to be working.
