What happened in your garden this week (Sept 6th)?

Here, land reclaiming, jungle fighting, call it what you want, but it's more than weeding: when the weeds are taller than me, it's X-treme weeding, at least!

An endless task... but I have discovered grapes I didn't know were there anymore, baby Japanese maples, and a lot of strawberry plants. More in store, I guess, so I'll continue the weeding.

Also, every weeded patch has had its layer of compost on top. I'll probably put my fall leaves on the top as well, to avoid having to weed again that much next year.

Yesterday: Weeding.

White Chiffon Rose of Sharon is doing nicely as a late-season entry.

Golden Rose of China bushes bought from eBay first-of-the-season are surviving and growing.

Dahlias still going and going and going...

Bicentenial Queen Daylily has about 5 more buds to go...

Transplanted stand of rudbeckia may or may not make it; looking pretty sad.

Celosia & Coleus are doing WONDERFULLY.

Marigolds- great.

Cottage Garden Boxed mix from WM: Cosmos are starting to come out, but they're probably the last to show. This section will be crew-cut very soon, as it looks more like weeds than anything else.

Garden Phlox: Got a tip from a friend to clip them back about 8" to new-growth area, and may get another round from them.

Sedums are going strong- bumblebees are loving them.

Weeding weeding weeding

Put in Daylily Magic Jungle and Black Columbine that a wonderful trader sent me. I had traded for the seeds to those and he sent me a plant of each as well, what a lovely bonus.

DH is almost done putting in trelliswork under the deck. So nice not to see the wasteland under the deck anymore.

Was away for the weekend, so not much else has happened. Harvesting seeds....planning a big bulb order this week.

Moved the wood pile from the east side of the garage to the new wood crib on the new farmerÂs porch. Turned over the now naked soil that was there and planted hybrid tea and climbing roses, euonymus, dwarf mugo pine, Asiatic and hybrid lilies, dwarf reblooming daylilies and some annual Â marigolds and dusty millers. Roses will probably get moved, as I rethink my garden plan in light of the changes in the construction of the addition on the house. Divided the three, ancient giant clumps of hostas that were where the new addition is going and made 20 smaller clumps that I planted in front of the farmerÂs porch on the north side of the house and the rest of the north wall. They should do well there and will be supplemented with seven ÂnamedÂ hostas and some astilbe (the led zeppelin plant) on the way from Bluestone. Moved some giant, ancient phlox from the construction site and moved to the south side of the main part of the house. Moved some basic, orange daylilies from in front of the house to along the drive, on the hillside, and down by the mailbox on the road. Used the blade on my heavy duty weed whacker to cut down about 100 sumac trees that had grown up under my power line. Did it two years ago and some of the new ones were already 15 feet high and getting into the wires. Also cleared out a lot of wild rose and have the cuts to prove it. Retrenched both sides of the drive on the hill Â clearing out the old leaves, weed and collected sediment and rebuilding where the rear tires of the farmerÂs tractor smooshed my ditches. My Kubota does most of the heavy lifting, but thereÂs still a fair amount of shovel digging. Went out in the rain yesterday and transplanted about 50 clumps of sedum onto the bare slope above one of the ditches, which is just under a stone wall near the top of the hill, to keep all the dirt from running back into the ditch. YIPPEE! we took down a bunch of saplings that had begun to encroach on the lawn. They were beginning to detract from a handsome oak and cast more sun on the terrace area than we (well, I!) wanted. It's been rainy and overcast all weekend (just in time for the German iris show) and I will be interested to see what the elimination of the saplings will do for the terrace area IF we ever see the sun again. The double pink peonies are just beginning to open. I don't know the variety, just that they came from the yard of a very old home now part of Strawbery Banke. They smell wonderful and always emerge before (what I THINK are) "Festiva Maxima". I mowed the lawn, too. And rearranged the plants I hoped to "unload" at the swap on Saturday... but a dead car battery put the kibosh on that plan.... :/ I am not thrilled with the knowledge that they'll remain in pots until late summer/early fall, but that's how goes sometimes, huh?

weeded, got bit by skeeters, ignored the scary tall grass, got bit by skeeters, put some more dirt/compost on the taters, got threeee big packages of seeeeeds in the mail, took the squirrel barrier screens off the beets & carrots & parsnips because they're getting big enough to fight back, got bit by skeeters, fluffed the compost & used some of it as mulch, planted some coral bell cuttings mom sent, got bit by skeeters, trimmed some of the delphiniums because the wind finished them off & they just might be convinced to bloom again, installed a delightful copper trellis & planted a climbing peace rose, gathered anemone sylvestris seed, said 'hi' to new nasturtium & hollyhock & spider flowers, marveled again & again at the loveliness of cerinthe 'pride of gibraltar,' picked & ate some peas, got bit by skeeters, compiled a $250 martagon lily/heirloom dahlia order online with old house gardens & erased it before i did anything that rash (this whim will be revisited this weekend), patted myself on the back again about the fabulousness & lushness of this year's window boxes, planted some more greens, checked the weather report about every 2 hours ...

On Sunday I installed a new shade garden around my shed. When it's in the mid 90s and humid you don't want to work in the sun. What nursery has the best shade plant selection in central CT? Unfortunately the load of compost I had delivered this spring and used as top dressing on many of my gardens was filled with weed seeds. Obviously it hadn't been "cooked" enough. Now I have grass and weeds sprouting everywhere and have to mulch over the compost that I had hoped to use as mulch. I get my bagged mulch that I use in the mixed beds in 3 cu foot bags at a seasonal garden center and they close on Saturday so I'll be loading up today and tomorrow. Everywhere else will get the bulk shredded stuff. I'm still planting containers and annuals but hope to have everything wrapped up in the next week or so so I can move into maintenance mode only. With rain in the forecast all weekend, what are the chances that will happen? Sue

I'm jungle fighting, too, Belle, but have had to take a break from that a bit to divide and pot up perennials for a benefit sale this weekend. Making good progress on that, and when I divide, I tend to weed around the area a little, so I guess I'm making some progress with that as well. Just by the time I get to area 3, area 1 needs weeding again...sigh.

Mostly watering, as usual! I did put down some more milky spore, and cleaned up the veggie patch a bit.

I also started on another lasagna bed. This one is pretty big, and while I knew I didn't have enough materials yet to put down all the layers, unfortunately I didn't even have enough to put down the entire FIRST layer! So I didn't get too far. But hey, it's a start.

Working up the nerve to stop by the local donut shop tomorrow to ask for coffee grounds. I don't know why I'm such a wimp about it, lol, but I am. Wish me luck!

Started planting again-had plants under the deck for 2 months but it was too hot and I was not motivated to plant and water them all around the yard.

In between WEEDING, got serious yellowjacket stings, so I'm obsessed with watching out for them. Today planted spinach that I'm hoping to winter over for an early spring start. WEEDING around strawberries, which always leads to transplanting the ones I pull by accident. Harvested and thinned salad greens (arugula, russian kale, scotch kale) and gave some away. Harvested cilantro, made fresh salsa (minus tomatoes), basil to mix with olive oil and freeze. NOT harvesting tomatoes, which haven't produced for me. (Picked about 4 delicious pineapple tomatilloes, immediately ate!) Harvested delicious burgundy bush beans: thin, crunchy, just right!

Forgot to mention: One shining thing: Ten years ago I planted a Rose of Sharon, in a hole scooped out of glacial till. It limped along for years, giving no or few blooms. I came home from vacation to find it covered with blossems! I hope it's not a swan song. Last fall I worked around it's base, adding sphagnum moss and some compost, in an attempt to retain some moisture around the roots. (It's on a rise over a pond, and I think the rain was just gliding off the soil's surface).

boltonia started to flower and is so graceful. Unfortunately it is hidden a little by a helenium that I didnt think would get so big. I highly recommend both plants and really appreciate the friend of a friend who gave me the splits back in May. Nasturtiums and broelia are bouncing back now that the intense heat is behind us. I may have drained the Quabbin reservoir watering last night. Very selfish I know but all of my beds are raised or terraced and they just dry right out in this wonderful sunny dry weather.

Aw, we had company all weekend so I got NOTHING done. It was just as well, I'm about to start digging up lawn (again!) and it was way to hot. These were some of my favorite people, but I sure was glad to see them go, even if it meant that summer's over.

Probably won't have any more visitors until spring, something about visiting Cape Cod in winter doesn't excite people. Aaaah! Back to my garden.
