Hi Elaine...I buy fuchsias there almost every year. The starts are small, but inexpensive & they offer a lot of varieties you'll never find in the box store nurseries...and many times not even in independent nurseries. They're located well to the east of Kent. It's good to go in March, if you can - they are often out of what I'm looking for by mid-April (altho they maintain a large number of cuttings well into May).

I notice right off the first variety listed is misspelled, also there really aren't that many fuchsias that are truly hardy even here. Be sure to check out ones listed that catch your interest and verify the information given about naming and hardiness and so on. It's always a good idea to compare multiple accounts when thinking about picking up a plant. These days you don't even have to go to a library, although reference books have not been completely replaced by the internet. In fact, Google etc. are putting books on the internet.

Based on the frequency with which the statement comes up, I'd have to assume bboy's definition of hardiness is a bit more stringent than most of us adhere to :-) I have to go along with Annette - I grow a good many hardy fuchsias myself and find that almost without exception, those designated as H3 are fully root hardy here in zones 7 and 8 if well planted. Top dieback during winter is variable but I've got a couple of H2's that have lived more than a couple of years in my garden without problems. 'Dying Embers' (H2) and 'Neon Tricolor' (F. denticulata) which isn't even listed, have lived for a number of years in containers without winter protection, as has 'Autumnale'. Other, somewhat more common varieties have established themselves as significant and very long flowering shrubs in my garden. Several are approaching 20 years old, which I'd consider to be a pretty good indication of reliable hardiness. All of mine have been purchased at local garden centers or directly from Carole Lynn Ives of Robinwood Nursery, a local grower/wholesaler who specializes in fuchsias and hebes hardy for the PNW.

For reference, I like the listing provided by the NW Fuchsia Society, who operate several local test gardens, including one at the Bellevue Botanical Gardens.

Now why didn't I think of that, the NW Fuchsia Society's list of hardies, Thanks Gardengal. I don't think many know how versatile this plant can be and being their list is specific to the PNW there are lots of possible color combinations for us to choose from. A

I've bought a lot from Monnier's

I have found many of the common upright fuchsias are also hardy. I have quite a few in containers that get no protection that have lived several years.

I do plant them deep when I plant them in the ground but not in containers.
