Madame Hardy(many large pics)

Typically, I edit and enhance almost all of my photos to make them appear true to life as they are underexposed on my digital camera or the color is off. With that said, the photos being underexposed, creates a dark background and really accentuates the bloom. While I will edit all of these photos later(takes DAYS!), I figured I would post the raw "artistic" photos of Madame Hardy since she is so photogenic. I plan on taking cuttings from the Park of Roses simply so I can enjoy these blooms every year. I detected absolutely no fragrance(surprisingly), but it may have been due to our absurd weather. Enjoy these while I edit them and try to categorize the already 2000+ pics I have taken at the Park so far this year. Hopefully, I can create a website or somehow culminate all the rose photos online for reference.

This rose simply has the most perfect blooms, almost as though it had been crafted in porcelain. So many buds too, and much larger that I thought this rose to be. You've taken some lovely pictures.

That it does. I will probably head back to the Park of Roses either tomorrow or the day after to capture it in a more fuller bloom and take a whole bunch of cuttings of various roses...Madame Hardy being one of them.

good grief....others too....it's a good thing they are cuttings now, otherwise I don't know what I would do with them. They will have to grow in pots for at least another year so hopefully they don't get too out of control by then LOL.

Of the literally hundreds of roses on my wish list , Jeffcat took such stunning pictures of Madame Hardy I got her last Spring. Sure enough the blooms were just like the pictures; perfect round white blooms with a button eye. The leaves are a brighter green than most of my other roses. Wind easily scattered the petals across the yard, so the blooms here did not have much chance to fade. In the morning when I got up, it was the first thing I did to go outside to see Madame Hardy and every petal that unfolded. My plant hated shade even though on HMF it is rated as shade tolerant. By the time I moved it for more sun, Madame was looking pretty unhappy. It is quite thorny , placement should be where you don't have to climb around while gardening. It is not an extremely lavish rose like the Austins, and not a punch in the nose perfume, but if you like smallish medium size blooms that hang like clean white laundry, you might love Madame Hardy as I do. Well, all I'm now looking at is a stub left where this glorious vine had been thriving, my fault for not giving it a good drink late last fall. It was getting to be very substantial plant that had measured 45 ft in total length. After its extreme hair cut, I expected it to explode with new growth from the base, but so far just one dominate shoot is coming. SCG, the plant was blooming when I had received it via mail order about 8 or 9 years ago and has flowered every year since. Wisteria loves sun and heat, I wouldn't go planting it in an area that receives a lot of shade. It also neeeeds a long warm growing season to ripen off in the autumn and believe me it's slow to do so.

Let me try re-trace my steps. When I first started using photobucket: I set the size to 640 x 480 (Large) I then uploaded 2 pics to begin. After uploading pics, I clicked on share, another screen came up, at the top of that screen on the right, I clicked on "Get link code" , another new screen comes up and I scrolled down until I seen: "HTML FOR WEBSITES AND BLOGS" FULL SIZE, I placed a check in that box and clicked on save. After doing that I went to the first pic I uploaded and clicked on share above it. A screen comes up: Where it says. Having trouble? Try using this code to post on another website: Directly underneath where it says this, I copy and paste that link into my thread or others threads on this forum. If I want to place more than 1 photo, I go to the next photo on photobucket and click on share above it. Scroll until it says: Having trouble? Try using this code to post on another website: directly underneath I copy and paste that link into the forum thread, below the first one I did earlier. There will be a different link for each separate photo. If done correctly, when you click on Preview Message here in your thread on the forum, it will show up as different pics. Then, submit message if everything looks ok. This has worked for me everytime. Hope this helps... JIM

Your pictures are lovely. You are right, Mme Hardy is very photogenic. What is the purple rose in the back of it in the first picture?

I personally feel very uncomfortable with people taking cuttings (or boquets or whatever) from a public garden without permission. Even though there is no policeman watching over your shoulder and no fine to pay, I think it is ethically not right. If you feel you must take cuttings, cut from the roses that can take it (are mature and healthy).

Oh Masha, I agree with you there. I am only taking 1 small cutting from each rose(monster ones at that). The bushes themselves are not well pruned and parts sprawl into other roses, so I'm almost doing them a favor LOL. I'm finding the most patent, yet insignificant cuttings I can such as cuttings I can get from a bent or low lying cane that will ultimately get pruned regardless.

The lovely rose in the background is Mrs. Anthony Waterer. I will post photos of it as well. I thought it was already in full bloom, until I went back and saw it this past weekend in FULL bloom. It really has a presence. While not true red, it gives that appearance from a distance. The rose is easily 15ft tall and 15' across at the top just full of blooms. It looks like fireworks going off. You can see the video in the link below for now as I am working on the photos still.

One of the bestblooms there is until July hits here and the I want to hide it the foliage gets so nasty.

Thanks for the great pix, Jeff! Have you considered posting them to helpmefind.com? (Especially the full-bush shot of Mrs. Anthony Waterer; they have only single-blossom shots of her - and now you've got me lusting after her! And with rugosa x Gen'l Jack as parents, the scent of that monster specimen must be to die for...)

Great comments all around, too (I hear ya, LaBrea!) This and William Lobb are the only ones of mine that the deer have touched (they must like the resinous taste?) - but only in the parts of the bush that thornier neighbors haven't grown through. (*Knock wood!*)

Thanks guys. The pictures were difficult to edit. Even these appear washed out in color, but it was hard to find a happy medium between color balance, shadown detail, and exposure otherwise you would end up with a dark image, too bright of a bloom to discern detail, and all that jazz.

I have taken almost 3000 pictures so far at the Park of Roses and I plan on uploading them all to HMF eventually....which was my principle goal in taking all of these photos in the first place. I have even photographed a few roses that are not even on HMF. I'd love to do it now, but my internet connection is REALLY bad and the process takes MONTHS to do at this rate. I am also job seeking and moving in a month or so out of my current rental location so I have been pressed for time, money, and just about everything else. haha

jeffcat, fwiw, I think almost every one of these photos is perfectly exposed. When you're shooting white roses, you have no other choice than to set the exposure for the white; otherwise, you'll blow out the white the way the first landscape does. You were lucky to be shooting on a nice overcast day. That's my favorite for saturating color without blowing highlights.

Thank you for shooting the Park of Roses. It's a lost treasure to most of the rest of us.
