If you have been away from the rose world for awhile you may be surprised to know that a large majority of the traditional rose companies have gone out of business or are just hanging on. J&P is still sending out catalogs, but after their bankruptcy and the sale of their growing fields I don't know where they get their roses. Weeks, the other main supplier and hybridizer of roses in the US also went bankrupt. They still have a few new introductions through Edmunds which was bought out by Jungs. Heirloom still offers a color catalog I think, but may be charging for it. There are some specialty rose nurseries around that use Fortuniana rootstock, or multiflora rootstock, but no catalogs. Roses Unlimited and Chamblees sell older introductions -no catalog. Rosemania sells new introduction Weeks roses - no catalog. To cut to the chase, if you are looking for those eye catching new introductions that used to be in page after page of colorful catalogs, you won't find them....Maryl

Ouch... thanks for the update Maryl... I am really sorry to hear about Weeks, they were such a great company. Does that mean I have to read websites in bed instead of falling asleep with comforting colorful paper catalogs??? lol Thanks for pointing to some nurseries and growers I hadn't heard about!

I think Weeks was purchased /is owned by by gardens Alive and has a 2013 catalogue online. Like a printable brochure. They list their vendors on their site (sources-- Edmunds, Regans etc.etc)
Alot of rose sellers sell own root roses these days- which you
May or may not like. I think J&P lost their grafting facilities (when it was first sold to Park seed (the holding company kept it).... Well, that's the story i heard, anyway.
I think Jackson Perkins is own root now- and is sold online at tbeir site.. I just got what's like a band- but bigger pot (little roots!) Pope John Paul Ii from them as a gift-- in zone 5b! I'll probably get a weeks version in spring from Regan.

I think David Austin has a catalog they mail.

The Austin catalog has good information but I usually order roses from Roses Unlimited. They have a good selection of own root roses. There is a lot of rose information at helpmefind.com/rose although they frequently give the default hardiness.

If you like own root roses- Antique rose emporium is where I've been having a nice time perusing lately online. If you select their complete listof roses, you will be taken to a handy list- alphabetic, with thumbnail and quick reference for size, hardiness, fragrance, repeat/once etc. if you see something interesting, clicking the thumbnail gives a good description of the plant. I'm eyeing ferdinand pitchard and sombreuil from them. They are well ranked by costomers, but i ca't personally say if they send healthy roses.

Well, I guess you'll have to take an IPad to bed to peruse the roses, now, lol. Progress . . . .

I really don't have a preference at this point of grafted over own root. In my zone 5b (or am I 6a now) garden I need to bury the graft anyways and I found in the past that many roses developed their own roots, which I really like. This is really exciting to finally get back into rosedom.

BTW, Chamblees does have a rose catalog. I get it every year. Lou

The mailorder place that I've been using because they send really nice big healthy plants is Palatine out of Canada. All their roses are on multiflora rootstock plus they have a lot of ADR roses for the person looking for disease resistance.

Once upon a time I gardened in zones 4 and 5. Brrr, lol! I started doing something sneaky back then - I only put in plants that were rated to the next colder zone, i.e. rated for zone 3 in 4 and rated to 4 in 5. It reduced my winter anxiety and increased my spring rewards. But of course it further limited, and I must say significantly so in those days, my selection in many cases. Since then, the rose hybridizers have been at work, and the zone 4 rose selections have expanded. I have never given up my zone 4 garden, and a nursery I have had a good experience with this year is Gertens. They are a retailer of the wholesale Bailey nursery roses. More info in the link below.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I ordered a Harrison's Yellow from Palatine a few years ago. I like their roses a lot, being from Germany and trusting the ADR mark. I was excited to find a lot of Kordes and Tantau roses finally being available over here.

If you decide to order from Palatine, check out Tantau's "Ascot". It's a beautiful, vigorous rose. HMF also has some wonderful photos of it. Diane
