Where can I buy mud boots/barn boots in Seattle?

Hi everyone,

Sadness: my old barn boots (thirteen years old now) finally are giving out on me and I need some new ones. These were from the now-defunct Chubby-n-Tubby's hardware store on Rainier Avenue in Seattle.

Do you know of any places in Seattle that sell cheap, durable mud-boots/barn boots? If so, feel free to share.

My feet, and floors, thank you. :)

Places that sell riding equipment will have them, although you may well pay too much for them. Issaquah Grange carries them. Another option is stores around the fisherman's terminal that outfit commercial fishermen and people going up north to work on the salmon packing lines. My last pair of boots came from there, although I don't recall the name of the store now. A little looser around the calf than barn boots, pull-on straps, and a nice bright shiny yellow.

Have you tried any of the Work & More stores? Not especially inexpensive, but they do carry a wide range of work clothes/boots and an extensive selection of foul weather gear.

I don't worry about special shoes right now, wear my moccasins every day; if it's wet wear my rubber slip on boots (can't remember the name for them), if it's really slippery and cold, put on my camping boots. Later, I'll dig out my shot moccasins with the hole in the toe. Those are my everyday, normal gardening shoes in nice weather. This winter I have been constantly changing, won't have to so much in the nicer weather. I bought several nice throw rugs for high traffic areas, a lot of good that has done - not, but they get crooked after walking on them a few times, washable which I like. The most critical area, I have 3, and the cat just loves to mess them up; try to straighten them every day. My carpeting is shot and dirty anyway, so I don't worry about it right now. Coming in from the back, there's vinyl flooring, then two steps, then more vinyl flooring in back hall and on into the kitchen, so that's easy to sweep and mop. Coming in from the front, by the time I get up 5 steps, the cement slab porch, wipe my feet on the thick jute mat, and enter the vinyl tiled foyer, then large, heavy cotton throw rug on the carpet by there, most of the dirt is gone. Sometimes I do have to take a paring knife and scrape the bottoms and sides of my shoes into the kitchen wastebasket. What I want most are some comfortable golf shoes. Those would help some aerating the lawn, and especially useful on my terraces which I now have to crawl up on my hands and knees to plant and weed one side so not much weeding gets done there. If I had golf shoes, I think I could walk up my terraces again without worrying about slipping and falling.

Yes muck boots are comfortable but watch out. After wearing them every off work minute for a couple of years I developed severe foot problems. They felt so much better than my steel shank barn boots (GI Joes or farm store), like walking around in slippers. I never had foot problems before. Garden clogs at least have support. I now have to wear expensive well constructed work boots with orthotics.....grrrr. I am an avid hiker and extremely physically active....always before I had hiked, gardened, worked on the farm in sturdy shoes...muck books were like going barefoot (which the physical therapist says would actually have been better). jwww

The Hunter boots have been very trendy for a while. They are constantly in fashion blogs. I have seen them recently, in real life, all over the Pac NW ... Seattle, Portland, etc. With that said, I never noticed them growing up here unless we were at the coast! I needed a new pair of rubber boots recently so did a lot of research. As mentioned, the Hunters don't appear to hold up like they used to from reading reviews online. I bought a $79 pair from Costco (who still offers a couple colors) because of their return policy. I would be cautious to purchase them elsewhere other than, perhaps, Nordstrom. At the same time, I also purchased a pair of Le Chameau's from Amazon at a substantial discount. Their reviews were much more positive, yet limited. I ended up keeping both. The Hunters feel really clunky and are oversized on my calves, but that makes it very easy to slip them on and off. If it's raining, and I need to wear boots outside briefly, they make sense. By contrast, the Le Chameau's are extremely fitted. I have small calves and just have room to fit leggings. The quality seems much nicer, they are smaller and pack up easily, they have a pretty lining, and I think they are more stylish/discreet. Because of the narrow fit, they aren't easy to get on and off without hands. So, I decided those would be better for rainy days when I will be out and about for a longer duration or for travel.

The first snow boots that I bought for here, using at the dog park and walking were a pair of Totes that I got at Burlington. I wore and wore and wore them and they were wonderful until I finally wore them out. They were comfortable and I could go on long walks in them. I have not been able to find another pair like them since...so sad! Their new styles just don't compare AND their sizing is all over the place! One shoe style will run crazy small, the next style will run really big. None have been very comfortable. I always go and look each winter to see if they have any new styles that are as good as my old faithfuls.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will check out Work & More and some of the granges and fishery supply places. I sure miss Chub n Tub!

I bought a pair of the original Muck boots (come in shoes, too!) A bit more than I meant to spend, but worth it. I was so pleased with them I purchased another pair for partner. Easy on, easy off, waterproof, comfortable with some traction too! We bought both at the local feed store, but have seen them at Molbaks as well. (Isn't there a Molbaks at U Village?)

Thanks for the tip on Muck boots. I'll keep an eye out for them. The Molbak's in U Village is a Smith and Hawken now, though they might have them too. I've got some cool gardening shoes (and durable plastic gardening sandals) and now I need to replace these boots. Thanks again everyone.

Maybe Fred Meyer or McLendons have them. I've seen them both places in the past.

I have a pair of Bogs; they aren't exactly fashionable (not the point, here!) but are a very useful mid-calf boot. They cost more than I intended to spend, but are really durable and comfortable! They are available online, but I bought mine at the local Ace Hardware.

I have slip on clog Bogs, got them on Amazon Prime = free shipping. They stay on well for going up and down my woodland trails with wheelbarrows etc. and kick off easily for going in and out of the house. Work fine for serious digging and shoveling, too.
With free shpping and free return if they don't fit, I was game for trying them and now really pleased.
Finally found something that fit my narrowish feet as well as the Anywhere slip ons I used for years til they were discontinued.
