We bought our daughter a pair of the tall shiny black adjustable back Hunter boots for Christmas. She said she loves them.
I have a pair of much less expensive rain boots. Mine are shiny yellow with white dots from Target. They are surprisingly comfy.

I just today bought a new pair of mid boots, easier to pack up and wear than my tall ones. These are the neoprene tops. Great for mucking around here with all the rain we have had.

I've been looking for some good Wellies and doing a lot of research on them, and my understanding is that Hunter isn't at all what they used to be. (Btw, I also got a pair of Bogs and really dislike them. They are SO uncomfortable. I never wear them).

If you can afford them, I'd get either Aigle or Le Chameau, which are from Europe so not easy to get. But those are the real deal. eBay has them as well.

But they are very pricey, so brace yourself.

I have Joules Wellie that my DD bought me for my birthday. They are navy with a pink stripe down the back. I love them! They are perfect as rain boots but I want another lower pair to wear when I am in the chicken coop or run.

Earlier this season I bought her a pair of Ralph Lauren Wellies and they are adorable as well.

To Allison who asked if it rains in n Florida. Yes it does.

But I have never (ever maybe) seen anyone ever wearing rubber boots. And seldom do you see rain coats.

LOL, maddielee. I live near Portland, Oregon and I've never seen anyone wear rubber boots either. Or carry an umbrella.

I live in the Midwest and though you see these types of boots in most all the stores, its rare to see them on the streets. But then again, when it's raining, most of us are looking down, even when we do have boots on, to avoid stepping in puddles.

The Joules boots are nice, I will have to see if I can find them to try in person. Aigle and Le Chameau are not in the ballpark for what I want to spend.

I thought I would want full height Hunters, but apparently they are not made for hobbit legs like mine :-) I am 5'4" and they were quite uncomfortable on my short legs-- too snug in the calf, very loose in the ankle, and the height was very close to my knee. How I wish I had long willowy legs! I always have to hem my pants.

Jlc - I think they make wide calf Hunters. I'm short and even at my smallest I have trouble with high boots fitting my calves so I can relate.

I love the look of Hunters and also feel they are a classic. Sadly can't say I own them to report. I have another pair of black weather boots that was a gift years ago. I'm not sure of the brand but I haven't been able to justify my need for another pair.

General note to all - There's comparison info out there on buying the kids vs. the adult size too.

OT: This thread reminded me of this photo I took in a coastal town in Cornwall last March. I think I might enlarge and frame this for my laundry room. :-)

Oh yes, of course we get lots of rain, I just don't have to be out walking around in it (& hardly ever in mud) for very long - usually just a sprint to & from the car ; J

The pair I linked to that we bought our daughter were adjustable as she has a bit on the large size ankles and calves. She was glad I decided to get that style instead of the plain that were on her list.

I have a couple of pairs of Hunters that I try to keep out of the barn. They wouldn't hold up to actual barn work. I have horses so for barn work I use Muck brand muck boots. Warm and waterproof. The Hunters are OK but not very comfy and If you wear them out all day, I like to have the liners in them plus insoles and socks. They do get sweaty. I like the equestrian style but for the price you can buy many different types of non leather rubber riding boots that would work just as well.

I was being sarcastic about it raining in FL. I have lived my entire life in AL and have been to FL (owned also) many times. Loved Destin back in the 80s, but not so much now. Too crowded!

I didn't consider buying rain boots until I started having to walk DGS into his preschool class. It seems to rain here for weeks at a time every season. Better than getting shoes and pants wet.

Also have short legs :( and the Hunters were not a good fit for me. I have the shorter (mid calf) Bogs that I find very comfortable. I wear them all year - to do lakeside clean up in the spring & right through the winter to shovel & take the dogs out.

I scored a crazy good deal on Burberry plaid rain boots before they closed their Freeport, Maine outlet store. Those are the ones I wear out & about. They're good looking, but not nearly as comfortable as the Bogs.

The Hunter boots have been very trendy for a while. They are constantly in fashion blogs. I have seen them recently, in real life, all over the Pac NW ... Seattle, Portland, etc. With that said, I never noticed them growing up here unless we were at the coast!

I needed a new pair of rubber boots recently so did a lot of research. As mentioned, the Hunters don't appear to hold up like they used to from reading reviews online. I bought a $79 pair from Costco (who still offers a couple colors) because of their return policy. I would be cautious to purchase them elsewhere other than, perhaps, Nordstrom.

At the same time, I also purchased a pair of Le Chameau's from Amazon at a substantial discount. Their reviews were much more positive, yet limited.

I ended up keeping both. The Hunters feel really clunky and are oversized on my calves, but that makes it very easy to slip them on and off. If it's raining, and I need to wear boots outside briefly, they make sense. By contrast, the Le Chameau's are extremely fitted. I have small calves and just have room to fit leggings. The quality seems much nicer, they are smaller and pack up easily, they have a pretty lining, and I think they are more stylish/discreet. Because of the narrow fit, they aren't easy to get on and off without hands. So, I decided those would be better for rainy days when I will be out and about for a longer duration or for travel.

JLC, while the hunter boots have been trendy (and still are), I think they are also pretty classic. You don't see many rubber boots/raincoats around here either. On days I work I do see the college girls in the rubber boots, that's about it. The farthest I would have to walk is from parking lot (on days I work) to door (and I park close), so no need for anything other than an umbrella. At home I do have a pair of weather "clog" type shoes which is what I prefer to take the pup out in bad weather. I can slip then on/off.

DD1's Hunters are about 8 years old and have held up well. Maybe like many things, they don't make them like they use to? DD2 cannot wear Hunters tall boots either. I haven't owned my long enough to know if they will last, and I don't wear them too often. I tend to stay home if it's raining, unless it's a DGS day. I bought my pair since I liked the shape, lighter weight (though still heavy) and color, not the label. I actually prefer apparel that does not have in-your-face labels.
