Sunflowers

Being a nature-lover, I keep bird feeders close to my house so I can watch the many varieties of visitors feed. I live in a rural situation, so have had great success in attracting them. Their favorite food is black-oil sunflower seeds. PROBLEM: The squirrels and goldfinches can finish off pounds of these seeds in short order, and it is getting expensive! SOLUTION?: I have decided to grow my own sunflowers this Summer. I have selected a sunny corner of my yard and just hope the soil (hardpan) will allow me to work it up and plant the mammoth seeds when warm enough. My questions are, have any of you grown sunflowers and, if so, what probems am I facing? Will I just be wasting my time? Are they difficult to harvest? Should I be aware of any pests or diseases? I've never attempted this growing project before, and am quite ignorant on the subject...............
