hello and thank you all

As a young child I was plucked from fertile Iowan gardens and shipped off with my family to Hong Kong. I wouldn't have traded those experiences for the world, but my exposure to plants was limited to thick jungles with taro and giant spiders and cobras and giant mosquitos and potted bouganvillea. Then I headed off to university (where my exposure to plants/herbs was, well, nevermind that...) and then to NYC for a few years. When I moved to CA to rejoin my family, I bought roses, I potted tomatoes, I commandeered corners of friends' gardens... and yet the heat and stress often left my green thumb holding brown wilties. Nothing prepared me for the flourish that has been my welcome to WA/OR. 6 year old heirloom seeds from Mt. Vernon that I thought were spent, wobbly seedlings long overdue in the ground... a garden planted as soon as we moved in...late...like end of June late... has flourished thick and fabulous. If this is a portent of the years to come, retire my suitcase... I am home. And to those of you who advised me as I debated leaving behind a rarely fruiting olive tree... and assured me that it would be ok.... it is. Indeed, it is. :)

Isn't it amazing Meghan? Gardening paradise. I am from CA too and absolutely love it here. I will never go back!

(Have you been here one full winter yet? Just wondering? :o).....In Feb. we go visit family in Phoenix for a much needed blast of sun. This will be my fourth winter. Last winter was a tough one, windstorms and all, no power here for 8 days. We just got 2 cords of firewood delivered. Thank goodness for wood stoves and generators.)

Jennifer: If you really only get 2-300 hrs chilling some of your new tree list will not work. I found Earli Autumn severely lacking in quality. Tomcot needs more chilling. Lapins, Stella and Rainier all need more chilling. I'd suggest Arctic Star nectarine over Fantasia or Jolly Red Giant. Nothing but rave reviews on Arctic Star. It's a top ten fruit for me, in other words about as good as anything. You might consider some figs and persimmon. Both very low chilling and easy to grow. You'll like them if you give them a chance. I loved my Strawberry Verte figs this year but there are many good varieties. I prefer the astringent until soft persimmon but you might like the Fuyu types.

I will try the lava rock option for my next future grow. I also water the plants from top with the nutrient solution to speed up the root growth. I transplanted these babies from soil and they already developed quite a lot of root mass so I slipped what I could through the netpot and the rest are laying down on the bottom surrounded by hydroton. My water lvl is about an inch from the bottom of the netpot, so I'm wondering if the droopiness is from too much water contact...Well from my understanding they are still pretty young so 500ppm seemed like the right choice but I can up it to see if they perk up... They kind of go from a little droopy in the sunlight then perk up a bit during the evening hours but its been 5 days and I don't see any progress really...I'm wondering now if I had a nute lock out, and might have to flush out the system for a couple hours with pH water only then slowly introduce nutes. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello all! Thank you ALL so much for the warm welcome! I really appreciate all your help and support! Here is a pic of my Tzu, Sophie, along with my first purchase of a Plumeria from the OC Swapmeet two years ago. By the time it bloomed, the tag was off. Now I'm not sure.
