Suggestions to fix my backyard and frontyard
Comments (3)Knowing how root intensive Coast Redwood trees can be, roots left in the ground after the stumps were ground out, (assuming the stumps were ground out?), could create problems. Definitely post some photos, hopefully that will show what you're dealing with....See MoreGutting my backyard-plans
Comments (24)"In terms of your suggestion regarding enlarging the deck, I’m afraid I completely disagree with that." I didn't mention that as the suggestion, but as an "either/or," depending on YOUR preferences. But I would add that IF you adapt the plants to your needs, then there is nothing to preclude their screening deck activities at whatever level you decide to use. It isn't as if you create one element (such as a deck) and then throw your hands up in the air about everything else, as though those things cannot be controlled. Everything you do in a clean-slate space is potentially under your control. But I can't see any reason why you'd create a new space that, from the get-go, doesn't solve all functional issues, including dining. (A deck that's only 8' in one dimension cannot adequately contain a typical outdoor dining set.) Limiting planning in that way is contrary to any philosophy on properly developing a property. Your drawing conveyed what you intended it convey .... how you thought of using the space. I was trying to get you to go further so you could get feedback about how others thought you might better use the space, making the thread more useful to you. My point in explaining the process of creating a base plan wasn't just because it's more useful in acquiring feedback, but so you could understand that it is more effective and 50 times easier and less complicated than what you drew....See MoreLooking for a new tree for my backyard
Comments (9)yes.. a pic would sure help us nail it ... add it in a reply ... trust me on this.. you want NOTHING that claims to be fast growing ... as it will ... too fast.. exceed your space ... trees simply do not stop growing at some magical height ... so fast to fill your space.. fast to exceed it ... also.. many of the 'fast growing' trees ... are inherently weak because of such ... many are soft wooded ... so they tend to start breaking down faster than other trees ... finally ... with trees.. we deal with tree time.. and that is usually counted in decades ... so it will be a long time.. before anything starts adding significant shade ... without a pic.. a nice smallish tree.. with a bit of spring pizzazz .... might be a redbud .... ken...See MoreHow do I make my Brooklyn backyard into a beautiful part of my home?
Comments (31)1. Glad you don't want grass in your city lot. Agreed, it is a mosquito magnet, and mosquitos are getting worse and worse because of the warm winters we have been having. 2. I really like your bricks and would not pave over them. You just need a good vision that will tie together a new fence, the bricks and your three large sides of beds. 3. Regarding your bilco doors to the basement, it brings up a question about the whole back of your house. There is a lot of mismatched after though happening. You need to think about the new awning and how you will repair the wall that is the base of your porch. Once the back of your house has more of a "look" to it, you can paint your bilco doors to become part of that scheme. Obviously the setting of the houses below are quite different than yours but they both match the doors to the look of the house and they have planting nearby. Perhaps you want to flank the left side of your basement doors with a planter so there is greenery on one side and steps on the other. I'm obsessed with city back yards and find lots of inspiration just doing a google image search for "Brooklyn backyard ideas". Good luck. It is a wonderful space....See Morewinsorw
