round-lobed hepatica in full bloom

one of my favorite signs of spring is the dainty white blossoms of the round-lobed hepatica. Mine caught me by surprise this year. I usually see the buds before they open but we've been having some work done on the house and I was so busy I didn't look at them until today when the splash of white caught my eye. Lovely little wild thing.

I noticed the first one in bloom Wed. while walking the dog, but it is the only one I've seen so far.

It has been so dry here for so long that the winter wildflower season is pretty poor so far, but I'm hoping the recent rainfall we received will help the spring wildflowers. It is too late, of course, for the wildflowers which typically sprout here in the fall and overwinter as small rosettes before resuming growth as winter temperatures warm up--they never sprouted back in the fall. That means we'll have our second "below average" wildflower season this year.

Spring Beauty (Claytonia virginica) just started blooming in our yard Thurs., which is the same day that our "Jane" magnolia bloomed and our second plum tree began blooming too. It is sort of early for them, but we've had temperatures this past week in the 80s and even hit 90 degrees one day, so it is not surprising that everything is blooming.

Now that the temps are colder, I bet the trees will slow down a little.

I also saw spring beauty on the south side of the rocks that border a flower bed. And out in the pasture the bluets are blooming. Haven't seen Johnny jump ups or wild anemones yet. But of course, the nasty deadnettle and henbit is starting up on southfacing slopes.

well, I found it. It turns out to be hepatica. Along the way I also found trillium, but I was able to identify that.

Thanks for the help. These were found on a hike up to the Castle Di Vezio near Varenna (on Lake Como). It was so beautiful, and I was rather proud of myself because the climb was strenuous for me, a 60 year old arthritic person, but I DID IT!

The sharp-lobed ones(Hepatica acutiloba) actually perform better for me than the round-lobed native(H. americana), that seem to prefer sharp drainage and are usually found on sandy or rocky slopes. I also grow H. nobilis(European), H. asiatica & H. henryi(both Asian). H. nobilis is a finiky one, but the two Asian specied are relatively easily cultivated. I would suggest starting withe the local native, H. americana, and provide them with a well drained soil mixture, incorporating small rocks, sand or gravel if necessary. The GNPS plant sale on Saturday will be your best source of plants, assuming you arrive VERY early, as they will sell out fast! Rb

Thanks. Would you keep the Austrian roses or let them grow in Austria. Are they are cheap $rose? My wife says destroy them. But I don't want to. You are right about being hard to start. I've tried two years to get starts rooted and all have failed. I do see many plants coming up from roots, but there's no way to tell if they are the yellow or copper. I have seen both the copper & yellow on the same plant, but have seen some stems that have solid red flowers. Evidently red is not dominant color? Thanks for the help on these. What do you think--kill them or try take cuttings, or new plants that have come up and move them? And anyone know on the other rose, that acts more like a rose, except it seems to have adapted to solid shade and blooms almost continually--very fragrant. It's definitely not a hybrid-tea.

Dorothy, I haven't seen any anemones yet either but I think maybe we've been too dry for them here. I don't have deadnettle or bluets (as far as I know) but the henbit is up here and there. Really, there's not as much henbit as usual, but that's probably drought-related too.

My "Jane" magnolia is blooming, the second plum tree is blooming, the Red Haven peach is in the pink, some of the Possumhaw hollies are blooming, and elms are leafing out. I've seen some wild violet foliage emerging too.

I also did notice some verbena bonariensis, larkspur, Indigo Spires Salvia, hollyhocks, Malva "Zebrina", and four o'clocks have emerged from the ground. It seems like something new is up every day.
