Pieris - Valley Valentine

We purchased a 2 gallon container of the Valley Valentine Pieris last fall from a local nursery from which we have purchased many shrubs and trees for many years, all with great success. All was fine until a couple of months ago when the entire plant appeared to shrivel and dry up. We had purchased about a dozen other containers at the same time (fuchsias, other pieris, etc.) and all of them were watered regularly. All the others are doing fine. We're trying to figure out what went wrong, mainly so that we don't repeat any mistake we may have made. Secondly, can this plant be saved? We've kept the root ball watered, but the tops are totally brown as though it was baked in an oven for an hour at 500 degrees! Thanks!
