A visit to Western Evergreen nursery
Comments (37)I recently ordered some plants from western evergreen and I must say they were all quality plants! Ik sometimes the website might be tougher to navigate but if you email him he gets back promptly. Definetly would recommend ordering from him!...See MorePortland houseplant nurseries
Comments (8)If any one place is better than any other as far as houseplant selection goes I haven't been there yet! I hope someone else knows more than I do about houseplants in Portland... I'm sorry to say that I find the selection of houseplants and tropicals here to be sad. Though some nurseries are catching up with tropicals. I saw a gorgeous variegated calamondin at Hughes Water Gardens the other day but it was too big for my tiny greenhouse. They had a variegated lemon too. Almost all local nurseries carry some citrus though, mostly from Monrovia. It is early for most to carry much though. I was a florist who started out in houseplants (specialty store/interior maintenance) for over twenty years. I started in Phoenix and moved to Portland in 1985. The selection of available houseplants/tropicals at wholesale dropped by more than half with the move, probably more. I was so surprised at how few choices there were here. I can only assume it is because the gloomy skies here can make growing houseplants difficult to say the least unless you have lights or a greenhouse. I have three in the house myself and that is the least I've had since I was twelve. My first apartment in Phoenix had a couple hundred. There are still easy to grow common plants that I've never seen offered for sale here that I sold and grew in Phoenix. Lots of different Philodendrons, Sansevierias and Aglaonemas for example. Sansevieria cylindrica was really popular here last year or the year before at Yard, Garden and Patio Show and I had one back in 1982 and it was no big deal. Not a trendy plant at all. I find the same plants, from the same wholesale growers at every retailer. Independent garden centers, grocery stores and big boxes almost all carry foliage plants from British Columbia. What varies is the pricing. With the big boxes also trucking in 10" foliage from Florida to die as soon as you get it home because it isn't acclimated. There were a few local growers for foliage but to the best of my knowledge they are now closed, the Canadians grow more varieties anyway. Portland Nursery on Division does have a big greenhouse has a lot of houseplants, more than anywhere else I know but their selection still does not compare to what I found in Phoenix AZ in the early 80's. Logee's Greenhouses online has the best selection I've ever seen but they are very expensive for small pots. Here is a link that might be useful: Logees...See Morebest specimen tree nursery in PDX area?
Comments (8)Loen's is having a wholesale open-to-the-public now, every Saturday 8/a - 3/p thru Mother's Day. Their retail center is open with 30% off now. They have excellent stock, and their prices are reasonable. BIG nursery, lots of variety. Depends what you are looking for -- lots of awesome nurseries. Portland Nursery is sometimes good. You have to shop around. Cistus is incredible for exotic stuff. Garden Corner is amazing for flowers and and little plants. Garden World sometimes has fabulous trees. Their prices have been going up. Great place to go look around, walk up and down their isles. Peace of Mind Nursery is absolutely mind-blowing. Pricey. I bought a lot of trees inexpensively from a nursery on their last out-of-business day, then what was left was given to 2 employees who started their own nursery, good stuff, very good prices, E & G Nursery in Sherwood. Hughes Water Garden in Tualatin is incredible for bogs and anything water related. There's a private arboretum in Troutdale that is fantastic and has some baby trees for sale. Lots of nurseries here. Lots of ppl like Al's. Pistil's in North Portland is interesting. 7 Dees has good plants. Evans Farm in Oregon City can have good trees. I just bought a beautiful Pinus monticola from a Christmas tree farm guy who also has lots of specimen trees at great prices and even has cultivars growing there named after him. Dan Rickels Tree Farm, Estacada. If I had known about him earlier I would have boughts LOTS of trees from him. Great gentleman too. Try nurseryguide.com and use their Search feature for specific trees....See MoreWA Nurseries to visit near I5 ?
Comments (9)Maybe look at Prinzig, 'Northwest Gardener's Resource Directory', I think 9th edition says it has 300 nurseries in coverage area. I have a copy and there is certainly alot of places described, including gardens and other non-commercial destinations. If Feeney, 'Gardeners on the Go - Seattle' is still available you might like to check that out as well. Cistus nursery on Sauvie Island would be my first pick for (just north of) Portland area. You could hit them and then drive up to Longview, connect with 5 there. If you are going to be in south Seattle Oasis Water Gardens might be of interest, if you like aquatics and similar plants....See Moreannzgw
