Nows the Time to Kill Dames Rocket

If youÂve seen clumps of pretty purple flowers along woodland edges in Massachusetts this past couple of weeks, chances are you have seen DameÂs Rocket. http://nbii-nin.ciesin.columbia.edu/ipane/icat/browse.do?specieId=114 Hesperis matronalis is a European plant that has been spread to the US and Canada by gardeners who enjoy its lovely purple flowers and easiness to grow. The seeds are often included in "native" wildflower mixes.

DameÂs RocketÂs willingness to spread earned it a spot on Massachusetts Prohibited Plant List: http://www.mass.gov/agr/farmproducts/proposed_prohibited_plant_list_v12-12-05.htm If you would like to help reduce the numbers of DameÂs Rocket in Massachusetts, now is the time to go pick yourself a lovely purple bouquet! (And while you are at it, pull up the entire plant. They uproot easily.)

Look for clusters of four-petaled flowers ranging from white to purple. If you are wanting something similar for your garden, try phlox instead. Phlox comes in similar colors but has five petals instead of four.

Happy flower-picking!
