All 9 rhododendrons have made it thus far. Considering these mature plants were transplanted April 1 & 2, and 2 months later they're in full bloom, well, hats off to Mother Nature. I am still very grateful for all the support and well-wishing the N.E. forum provided throughout this transition from old breaking pines to the rhody border. The rhodys will remain staked and guarded for the next few years. So far, it all worked well in that they provide a graceful privacy barrier against the street. Of course, I got carried away and bought 4 new rhodys, new varieties for me and a new rhody garden went in where the 2 maples were felled. They surround a 14'tall Prairiefire crabapple that also bloomed beautifully. I got lucky! So, as promised, below are the "after" pictures of "Pining Over Pines". This is a great forum! Thanks to each of you who posted your support of this winter disaster. Spring sprung!

Jane...that Rhododendron is HUGE and covered with blooms!! Who would have thought that a shrub that size, being moved this spring, would recover in time to put on such a spectacular display. Instant privacy too. Congratulations! Now you don't have to worry about the pines coming down on your roof next winter, either. I really appreciate you taking the time to post photos of the finished project. Most of us usually forget. [g]

Hope you will post more photos of your garden as the season progresses, I would love to see more.

In case Tony/Incognito doesn't answer right away about the herbicide impregnated root barrier, this product is used in urban street plantings where surface rooting is to be discouraged, and it actually does last for a very long time, but would probably need to extend at least 2 to 3 feet down vertically, or until you hit bedrock or a soil depth where there isn't enough oxygen in the soil to encourage tree root growth. The possibility always exists that tree roots can still grow under it and then into the new area, but typically it is the main principal roots that tend to serve as anchor roots for the tree's stability that do the most damage to pavement, and on older trees like pines these tend to stay near the surface, but that will vary greatly on your soil type and soil moisture conditions at different depths. Your arborist/consultant should be able to advise you more specifically if this herbicide impregnated root barrier makes sense to add against the new curb/wall to help protect it. I wouldn't rule out other sun loving bromeliads for this sunny situation, things like the more terrestrial growing Puya or Dyckia species might be good choices, and it also sounds like this thin soil, sunny area full of tree roots might be an excellent location for clumps of Agaves such as A. bracteosa, A. 'Sharkskin' or A. parryii cultivars, or in combination with things like Echeveria agavoides or Bulbine frutescens. Aloes such as A. saponaria or A. striata would also do well there. All of these plants would grow better if planted in a new layer of topsoil added over the tree roots, and given at least a monthly periodic good soak, or more often depending on how quickly/lushly you prefer them to look. California natives such as Mimulus aurantiacus, Salvia clevelandii or S. leucophylla 'Pt. Sal' could also look good here, or even more adventurous plantings like Metrosideros collina 'Springfire' or Metrosideros collina 'Tahiti'. A really cool looking green fuzzy flowered Aloe such as A. tomentosa would probably also do well there, or other Aloes such as A. castanea, A. camperi, A. rubroviolacea or A. vanbalenii.

sounds like a lot of worry for something that may never happen .... especially prophylactic chemical use ... in my z5 MI .... near the OH border ... white pine grow 3 to 5 feet per year,once established .... re-leader extremely quickly ... and are basically weed trees ... in the sense that you cant beat them back with a stick ... once they get going .... some of your presumptions MIGHT be wrong ... the fact that it is in the wide open.. suggests not just your conclusion.. but the conclusion that the odds of any given bug finding it low ... and that you will be able to ladder up the thing for 10 years ... i would bet on MAYBE 3 years ... since you wont be putting a ladder up against fresh weak growth .... so.. i would wonder if all your worry is worth it .... also .. given their growth rate.. i hope you planted it a good 20 to 30 feet from your house .. they are not strong wooded ... and subject to shedding large parts in 20 or 30 years.. in harsh weather.. like winter ice storms and wind .... good luck ken

Thanks for all the info. I'm still not sure if I should be concerned with the brown tips coinciding with the lack of cones or if this is normal, too. There would be no way to spray these giants (nor can I inspect for bugs) but would some kind of conifer food help? There's been 2 years with big pinecone amounts that I know of, by the frequent gutter cleanings I have done in not quite 2 years I've lived here...neighbor's tree but over my gutters!!! Last year it was clogged with pine cones, this year, I've been out almost every rain storm unclogging the needles. And, yes, this is with gutter covers! Last winter, a little red squirrel piled all 8 trees with 2 foot high mounds of cones for his winter bounty and sat daily, munching and strewing the empty cobs about. I guess he'll find a new winter home. The birds did have a few pinenut frenzies but way up top and not for days and days like last fall. I'm also fighting a bit of lilac blight (again, her lilacs but half are over my property line and front half are under the pines) and at least licked it enough to get lots of new growth and a load of blooms this spring after no blooms the first spring I moved here. Could there be a connection considering they are close by? Can a lilac fungus effect a pine? Doesn't seem likely but I moved here from Brooklyn...what do I know??! I'm game to go with the idea they fluctuate production and keep an eye out. But any ideas how I can make sure to keep them healthy would be welcome.

I, too, have two huge fir trees in my small front yard in N. Seattle and they were huge in June 1972 when we bought the house. At one time there was a nice little lawn under the trees that my ex-husband was tending, but I have never been much of a gardener so now it's all dandilions and bare dirt. I have a German Shepherd and would like to have a little patch of grass for her, with the rest of the yard being covered with woodchips. She spends most of her time in the house, so the yard is not her main focus. I am tired of it looking so ratty and have planted some bulbs in pots, and they are coming up. I also have two big rhodys that continue to do well. I have thought of buying a little patch of sod and rolling it out for an instant lawn, but first the prepwork must be done. After reading all these exchanges about fir trees and vegetation, I suspect I should be thankful that there are dandilions growing well under my trees! I will never cut them down! Maybe putting some steppables out there in the middle would be almost as good as a little patch of lawn. Any thoughts are welcome.

It looks just as it should, like the rhody's have always been there. You can take a deep breath now - but maybe get a shotgun for next winter when the snowplows start up again.

Laughing at kt's comment. Have to be truthful, am sitting with a shiatsu pillow to my back and as for the transplanting?... I made arrangements, gave orders, and wrote checks, lol. My strong back retired years ago, so I hired 30 year olds, lol. Only credit I can take is having the idea, during the research, and a possessing a motor mouth to make it happen. Thanks.

I too am amazed at that HUGE Rhody being transplanted so successfully. Fantastic! And your border looks excellent, I kinda like it better than the Pines.

You must have a lot more sun now. I realize it wasn't your choice to remove the pines, but there is an upside to tree removal. I had some large Norway maples removed last November and am so glad they're gone. Norways are horrible - non-native, HIGHLY invasive, huge aggressive canopies, and wide-spreading, greedy, allelopathic roots. Nearly impossible to grow under. I'm having a lot of fun planning/building new gardens.

Jane -- Spectacular! Not sure who gets the most credit: you for your optimism and determination, the crew(s) who moved those replanted such large shrubs so professionally -- AND successfully! -- or Mother Nature, since those rhodys themselves must have decided their new home was "a keeper"! (I think plants know a loving home when they land in one, don't you think?)

Congratulations to you ALL! BEAUTIFUL!

(Meanwhile, my neighbors have just had a tree service take down NINE large oaks and other deciduous trees in their yard adjoining our property, because they have to replace a septic field and that is the only place it can go ... they are still in the "there's so much more light now" stage (I myself am in the grieving stage but then it wasn't my septic system that failed!) and they have said they will be planting some ornamental blooming trees, presumably shallow-rooted varieties, in their place, but it is heartbreaking to me -- no matter what the necessity -- to see magnificant, mature hardwoods come down to meet our human needs...)
