Hi! More stuff to ID..

Hi Zone 6b woodland stuff I need some help IDing. Brought the house in Sept 06...and have a lot to learn. Home was owned for 60 yrs by same couple and in their younger days they were quite the gardeners..finding all sorts of Stachys and Dicentiras ect as I get rid of weeds and twigs and cut down some of the the under story litter in a woodland damp shade area..but this is some stuff I can't put a name to can you help?

Now, George Clooney I wouldn't mind seeing... Back before I was married, and worked in a mall bookstore in Lexington, the story was that George used to sell shoes or something, at McAlpin's (a department store). Now I don't remember if it was supposed to be the same mall, but that didn't really matter. The point was to give the girls something to sigh over while we passed the hours...:o) Linda, it is definitely icky here today! It was drizzling ice, and it just started snowing. Cold, cold. But maybe this will be the last of it! So did your daughter make it into any scenes in the movie? That must have been so much fun! I told my mom about the makeover show being in town, and she couldn't believe they weren't redoing OUR house. I said, "Why, did you call in and request it?" Her response was "Well, I never was good with directions." Thanks, Mom, LOL

This is the best site for seed germinating info I've come across: Tom Clothier's Garden Walk and Talk. I find Datura odd. Sometimes I'll get nothing from a bunch of seeds, and sometimes I'll get 90-100% germinating. I've never figured it out. I have had no luck at all with any of the doubles - it could be my technique, it could be the seeds are bad. 'Belle Blanche' should be easier than 1 out of dozens, maybe you had an old bunch of seeds? Clematis from seed can be slow (depending on the sort), and it might not resemble the parent (or it might!), but it should be fairly easy. Clematis will benefit greatly from a cold period. I've never grown chinese lanterns fron seed, but I've grown two close relatives from seed many times: tomatillos and ground cherries. Neither of those get fermented, so I doubt that the chinese lantern seeds need it. I should say that though I don't ferment my tomato seeds, I do remove the jelly-like covering on them (placing the seed on a paper towel and mushing it gently with your finger does the trick for me). The jelly supposedly inhibits germination, but I've had seeds that didn't get it removed germinate just as quickly as ones without it. I'd still prefer remove it by mushing though, as it may cause the seed to rot if it's left there being moist. About the cold period - you can't just toss the seeds in the fridge in their envelope. They have to be sown in slightly damp seed starting mix. If the seeds are large enough to be carefully handled with tweezers, I use small 1-2oz containers, and carefully transfer the seeds to larger containers when they come out(some may already be germinating). If the seeds are too small to handle in that way, I put their sowing pots into a plastic baggie and put that in the fridge (takes up a bit of room though!). A really good book is the "A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants". But it's pricey ($66.50 at Amazon.ca), and it's HEAVY!!! I got mine as a birthday gift - I couldn't justify buying it myself, but I really wanted it. I have found that mant books that you find remaindered at the front of bookstores are good enough, they may not be the best out there, but they're cheap. BP

Lynn we are in a very similar place about our house - it's too big for us at this stage of our lives. We use most of the square footage in some way - because it's there - but could easily manage with half ! Our youngest will be graduating from college next May and HOPEFULLY will be employed and able to support himself but who knows? Our older son works for the forest service but those gov't jobs are shakey, to say the least, so we always want to have a place where they can land if needed. So.... we keep the big old house - for now. Stuff? I reached a saturation point many years ago and continually work to pare down. But it's back to that big house thing again - I'm not going to live in empty rooms so there's still far more STUFF than I actually need. When my mom died and I helped my dad move into an apartment, tons of family stuff came my way. Eleven years later when my dad died, the rest of it came to me. We've all talked about this before - the pull of family items and how hard it is to get rid of some things. But it has to be done so over the years I've pared down to the things that have the most meaning and passed the rest on in one way or another. I have dreams (nightmares?) about moving into a small home and having boxes and furniture stacked everywhere because I didn't sort and get rid of enough before moving!! Gifts? I could write a book. Christmas at my in-laws used to make me physically ill with the insane buying and giving of cr@p. It doesn't matter to me a bit how much time is put into the shopping and wrapping, or what the item is. When someone (namely my MIL) is purchasing *stuff* because of a date on a calendar and is obsessed with getting the same # of packages for each person, because that's "just what you do for Xmas" I want no part of it. We'd been married only a short time when I told my DH that I was opting out. He was totally on board. It was a sore spot with everyone in his family for many years but we held firm. We just stopped buying. Our kids would get everything they needed and some of what they wanted all through the year at a time when it made sense to get the item, not an enormous pile o' stuff, all on one day, much of it to be returned, exchanged or donated. And that returning/exchanging all fell to me, of course. A few years of that and we started just donating everything, in the boxes, tags still on. Give me a quiet day, with my family cooking together, laughing and going for a long walk...... THAT'S the gift I want.

I'll check that out ML - I'm hoping to get SS. Saw the sink - it'll be fine and i'll just change what i was getting for a faucet and get one that has the handle and sprayer on the faucet. They're usually more $s so i was staying away from them but with the savings on the sink, going an extra 50.00 up for the faucet will be worth it. I don't want to bother with the expensive/mess of drilling another hole in it. i should be able to get both for what a sink like this one would cost. I go look at the stove in the morning. she said they switched out to SS appliances. It's 30" wide - fine for me. I don't remember if i have a 30 or 36" in there now. but 30 will fit in a 36" space. that'll give me 6" more if/when I change out the base cabs next yr. I do hope i can reach the back knobs ok... made a quick decision that it'd save me at least 400.00 (than if I got them separate) and since I don't cook much it really shouldn't matter. If this next yr is horrible using it, I'm only out 120.00. I'm also hoping to go look at those steps in the morning - so girl has an easier way up. We're staying there tonight and i'll have to carry her up...and down. She's fallen a few times here - tripping over things (she used to see them) and trying to jump up on the bed and falling backwards... and jumping off of it - and crashing. Her frail little boney body can't take more of this. So I'm packing some snacks (for both of us) and drinks and going there. I'll make a trip back here for her pillows and blankie - and my pillow too! That's about all we need for the night. If something drastic is missing, the door into this place is about 5' from the back door of that one. She does slip on the kitchen floor there, so I'm going to put the striped rug i have down on that laminate - and close off the other doors. She'll be able to wander in 'our' room, the bath, LR/DR, Kit and west hall. i'll leave a light on for her... lol! I doubt she'll go far from me. but if she falls off of that bed it's not even 12" (and I have padding on the floor) - here it's the mattress, bx springs AND bed frame. There's padding on the floor here also but it doesn't seem as 'padded' with the extra distance to the floor... the last time we were there she slept on the floor beside the mattress (and me)- that's safer for her but I miss her curling up to my back. sometimes she'll come up when I'm typing on the keyboard and put her chin on my shoulder like she's reading what i'm typing - lol! The vanity is 48" and my space is 66", so it'll fit. he says it's wood (not plywood/particle board). i won't mess with putting it in til this coming winter - or spring tho. i hope my BIL will go get it - it isn't real close to us - maybe 30 or so miles away. My sister has eye surgery again tomorrow so he's been busy taking her in for that and back home - and then back on Thursdays for a check up. ML - thx for info on hacksaw - I should look it up - I also need to measure my saw. I've seen at least 2 sizes at the store and don't know which one would fit my saw. I thought it'd be a great little saw to cut off a small branch or 2 (or 10) on brush around here.

Its close to that but the leaf is smaller about dixie cup size.
and the "flower" as it were.. is in a straight line the"buds" are finer...looks more like the stamen on some thing that is on the tip of my tounge....

That is about the size of the leaves in my little patch of them (if you are speaking of the wild lily of the vally). They get little green berries with red speckles after they are done flowering.

Hi there. I am so *impressed* with EST. I googled jewelweed, and she was dead-on. Looks like it is a natural remedy for poison ivy? And a native?

Googled creeping buttercup. She was dead-on again. A tough invasive from S Africa. Hard to eradicate and pushing out lots of natives.

Googled starflower. She got that one too! A native, endangered in the south.

Heck I am impressed by you all...and maybe the pic ratio on the WLOV is off making it look much bigger to me.. Nuthin' to do but take more pics when they bloom..
I am laughing about the Jewel weed..as I sit here trying very hard to not scratch my poison ivy covered arm....

Ding ding ding on the last one... SIGH I have a lot more pulling to do now......DH is telling me he likes it.the wood aster...maybe he just does not want to help weed?...

the plant I am thinking of gets none of the red/green berries you mention...I will go see i I can find one in flower..more like fruit I guess since there is no flower..I have looked thru a lot of books and sites and can't find it.
it's lone leaf has been up for about 2 weeks. the whole thing will go dormant wen it gets warmer...

Canada mayflower is the one you are referring to as a "wild lily of the valley..."

I agree with Emily, it's Canada Mayflower - Maianthemum canadense. I just trotted out to my backyard and took these photos.

Given a chance, or even a hint of a chance, it will spread quietly over a large area. It's just starting to bloom now. I like it; not everyone does. My neighbor calls them "little ears".

I was curious about the "no fruit", so I did some googling.

According to Wikipedia,

"The plant appears in two forms, either two or three leaves growing with a fruiting stem, or a single leaf rising from the ground with no fruiting structures."

I often see the single leaf form when the plant is just scouting out new areas to colonize.

Why thank you for the compliments.

That is all interesting information! I get a lot of tiny flowers on my wild lily of the vally and then the little berries. I consider it a pretty little plant.

I love the Canada Mayflower too! The flowers are so small and delicate, but they are quite fragrant. You have some other nice natives growing in your yard.

Picture #7 looks like 2 species of Solidago or Goldenrod, but it's hard to tell which from the foliage. There are about 100 different species that are native to North America, they are kind of weedy, but they are important sources of nectar for pollinators late in the season. A few species have seeded themselves in my yard, and so I moved them into garden beds and have enjoyed figuring out which species they are and think that some of them are quite pretty.

Jewelweed is a prolific native annual that does great in shady moist places. Don't pull it all, Hummingbirds like the orange tubular flowers!

prolific is right on that jewel weed...
I am leaving a large patch in an area I am not adding to at all..just removing invasive from.The Jewel weed can have a blast there.
Besides I may need the flowers myself..it seems I am VERY sensitive to poison ivy. I am trying to tell DH we need a goat so it can eat the PI..but he ain't buying it!

I did transplant a large Solomons seal colony ..it was in an area that my kids play in.
I am very tickled with the star flowers,and looking forward to the Mayflowers growing up..

And.... a friend of mine had to have her septic done...and right before the digging she found a colony of lady slippers... She gave me 4 to see if between the 2 of us we can keep them alive.It's been a week here and so far so good..I did pinch off the flower bud..as heartbreaking as that was... I want them to build roots and not flowers...

According to the invasive site, Jimsonweed is invasive and another site says it is banned in Connecticut. I did not know that! Is there a variety of Datura that will live in our zone? My datura varieties never even seeded over.
