Vancouver favorite nurseries/gardens

Do you have suggestions of good gardens and nurseries for me to visit in Vancouver this summer? Thanks so much! I am looking forward to visiting this beautiful city.

I assume you're referring to the British Columbia city of Vancouver...not the one in WA state?! Obviously, the one in BC is much more beautiful.

I'll be taking notes along with you. There was a great thread here on Vancouver Island, chock full of "must" places to visit. It included a number of places I hadn't heard of and will want to go to.

There are quite a few public gardens just in the Vancouver BC city limits. Some of the one's that pop to mind are,

UBC Botanical Gardens
Van Dusen Gardens (37th & Oak St.)
Queen Elizabeth Park (and Little Mountain)
Stanley Park
Also, a sunset stroll along Sunset Beach to English Bay where the plant life is very Mediterranean (Palm trees etc.)

Vancouver Canada also has many nurseries and garden centers, far to numerous to list. Once outside city limits the numbers compound and you may want an extended visit.

In my many years of visiting those areas, sometimes the best are private gardens and small specialty nurseries.

I am an avid gardener and have my own home-based nursery--I honestly have hundreds if not thousands of plants...too numerous to list...LOL I am sure a large proportion would not survive in Edmonton, but then again I haven't lived there for over 25 years, and I think it is milder now than when I grew up there... I think I have a copy of one of Lois Hole's books around somewhere... honalee, that list was very useful...I will look up greenlandgarden too. Has anyone grown Purple sensation allium or Allium gigancticum, Allium cernum? I have bulbs I could divide, but don't want to waste them if they won't grow there. I have lots of Hellebores too. Lady's Mantle(alchemilla mollis)--I looked up the Devonian garden site, and they list Trilliums, I could share some of those- has anyone grown them successfully? My son may be flying home to supervise his move in the next couple of weeks- would he be able to heel some plants in now and transplant them next spring? I do a fair bit of fall planting here, not sure if you can do it in Edmonton?

Hi, I just found this thread and with it, some great ideas for some new places to try. We live on the North Shore (MA) on the seacoast just south of the the MA/NH line. Here are our favorites: Our Favorite: NunanÂs Florist and Greenhouse 269 Central Street, Georgetown, MA 01833 www.nunans.com (978) 352-2927â Great variety of annuals, perennials, herbs, shrubs, trees, vines, ferns, native plants, fruit trees, and unusual plants as well. They also have mulch, lots of gorgeous statuary, garden furniture, and a large and airy shop with every doo dad and tool you can imagine, and a full service florist shop. Prices are excellent and at the end of the season, you can get some amazing bargains. First Runner Up: Corliss Brothers Nursery 31 Essex Rd. ItÂs a hike for us but we make the trip at least a couple of times a year. One thing to remember, they accept cash and checks but no credit cards. They give lectures on various topics throughout the area. Sandi, if you are in southern Wisconsin check out the Flower Factory near Stoughton, south of Madison. They have some very nice demonstration gardens, as well as a large variety of perennials, and especially hostas and daylilies.Take your checkbook--They don't take credit cards. If you want a trip to northern Wisconsin, plan to stop at the Winter Greenhouse near the village of Winter in Sawyer county.The demonstration gardens are spectacular all spring and summer. They are one of the best sources for perennials--healthy, moderately priced plants and a very large listing. They also have some wildflowers, shrubs and water plants and annuals early in the season. You might want to visit Southlands Nursery on Balaclava in Vancouver. It is owned by Thomas Hobbs of "Jewel Box Garden" fame (great book if you don't know it!). It is a smallish nursery with a wonderful, and unusual selection of plants..

There's also Dr. Sun Yat San garden in Chinatown. And if you're in for a drive, there's Minter's Garden in Chilliwack. From June 9 to 12, vanDusen garden is having its annual show. I think this year's theme is Art and artists.

There are MANY nurseries in Langley, just SE of Vancouver. My favorite is Rain Forest Nursery, on 227th. The owner's name is Tony, and he has lots of unusual plants, and will special order things for you.

Minter Gardens Nursery (not the gardens, but the nursery store, on Young St, in Chilliwack, also has a wonderful selection, and Brian Minter prides himself on always having the newest things out).

Government House, in town. No charge and lots of lovely gardens. Herb, perennial, shrub, rose.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question but... are you allowed to bring live plants over the border from Canada to the USA? I've always been afraid to go plant shopping in Canada for fear I couldn't bring my purchases back with me.

There are strict regulations on plant importation. Check with gov't agencies prior to importing plant material. In most cases (unless you're a specialty collector or nurseryman) it's probably not worth the bother.

A place for good quality plants and verrrrrrryy good price = Devon Nursery on Fraser Hwy in Abbotsford.
