favorite garden centers\nurseries in upper midwest?

I am wondering what your favorite garden center is. What do you like best about it & where is it located.

Mine is Mileagers in Racine, WI. Beautiful plants, big selection, including many unusual perennials and herbs.

How about you all?..........

I really love Busse Gardens (www.bussegardens.com) They are located in Big Lake, MN. They have great plants. I mail ordered from them the past 3 years and just love the plants they send. They do have a large selection and are very pleasant to deal with.

Wellrounded, Early on you asked about Noisettes. FWIW my experiences in a zone6-7 growing environment is that the simpler noisettes (as opposed to the tea noisettes) are stronger through winter than HTs. I grow Chinas and Rosa moschata. The chinas have little winter damage; R. moschata likes the warmer area (up by the house) and tolerates with slow growth the bottom of the hill which I've measured as five to seven degrees colder in difficult winters. The smaller blooming single and semidouble and double noisettes put on good size in my gardens. They keep their older canes through winter although they will loose canes put out in late fall. In a warmer area downstream, down the river in Knoxville, with some kind of heat island from the city plus many, many cars going by each day, a tea noisette (Duch. de Auerstadt) had great growth and bloom. Mine from the same source struggles. If you grow Chinas easily, it's worth trying the simpler noisettes as well as R. moschata (for its fragrance and elegance). If you're in an area with great heat (for your zone) and most of your HT canes make it through almostall winters, try a tea noisette or two. Much luck, they are worth the effort.

oh landscape daylilys ok thats different, look back on the forum and find the best performers heres one from 2010, some are in the list every year, el desperado, happy returns....and see what zone they're in. hope this helps and whats your budget and the size of your area? that will say something too, our local grow shop sells pots of daylilys at the end of their blooming for half off one year i got no names for 1. a pot they all came out to be the same color except one, but well my place is covered in big beautiful golden yellow daylilys! Funke's used to be great, but he has pretty much downsized and is not stocking nearly as much stuff anymore. Greenfield's is great for perennials. Biggest selection anywhere. Prices are high though. But if you have to have one of the newbies, that's the place to go. Adopt-A-Plant is great. Lots of herbs and annuals. And lots of perennials. Used to be they only had the common perennials but I have seen their list for this year and they have lots of the new varieities that have just come out. Their prices are much lower on all their plants than most places. Plus I like the setting. Trees and benches and a swingset for the kids. Northgate is good if all you're looking for is annuals. Same with AJ Rahn. I would love to find a place that had all their current inventory online, too. But I imagine they're all too busy during that time of the year.

Sandi, when I lived in Green Bay, WI I liked Schroeder's Flowerland cuz they had the largest rose selection in town. :-) Stein's was pretty good too.

Sandi, if you are in southern Wisconsin check out the Flower Factory near Stoughton, south of Madison. They have some very nice demonstration gardens, as well as a large variety of perennials, and especially hostas and daylilies.Take your checkbook--They don't take credit cards. If you want a trip to northern Wisconsin, plan to stop at the Winter Greenhouse near the village of Winter in Sawyer county.The demonstration gardens are spectacular all spring and summer. They are one of the best sources for perennials--healthy, moderately priced plants and a very large listing. They also have some wildflowers, shrubs and water plants and annuals early in the season.
