I thought the "new" would wear off after the first few visits or so to Chamblee's. I only live about an hour away so I get to go there a couple of times a year... but every single time I get a bit of thrill. I must admit the one picture of Chamblee's you posted makes me want to take a road trip!

I grow Noisettes here, and they do well. They don't grow as large as in a warm zone, but they are lovely and repeat well.

wellrounded, do you go to the garden in tyler? i forgot the name, but they have a huge rose garden i intend to visit!! whenever i do this, and see a rose i haven't seen in person, it is like seeing a movie star (for a movie fan!!) it is SO exciting!!! only rose-people can understand, i am sure...actually, i don't get excited spotting a celebrity, seems invasive...

Does the ARS center still have the huge hedge of Shreveport roses that were to the left (?northwest) of the former office building?

I never saw it in full bloom, it always was just past bloom when we'd go up there from NOLA to get away from the Quarter for spring weekends.

I'd love to know the longevity of the big HTs there.

We didn't get to the Tyler Rose Garden but I did pick up a brochure for a future trip. It says they have 32,000 bushes with 600 different cultivars. The two stops was pressing my limit and we also had a concert to get to at Uncle Calvin's in Dallas that evening so we were really out of time.

I remember the row of Shreveport roses from a visit probably 15 years ago. Honestly, I didn't look close enough at the formal modern beds around the office to know. They had all been trimmed down earlier this year and were a long way from blooming. I almost bought Shreveport while at Chamblee's. It is Angie's favorite color rose and one I enjoyed growing it several years ago. Angie would even go for Tropicana but that's another story.

I will certainly be planning another trip to Chamblee's and will be doing some research on those Noisette Roses.

Early on you asked about Noisettes. FWIW my experiences in a zone6-7 growing environment is that the simpler noisettes (as opposed to the tea noisettes) are stronger through winter than HTs.

I grow Chinas and Rosa moschata. The chinas have little winter damage; R. moschata likes the warmer area (up by the house) and tolerates with slow growth the bottom of the hill which I've measured as five to seven degrees colder in difficult winters.

The smaller blooming single and semidouble and double noisettes put on good size in my gardens. They keep their older canes through winter although they will loose canes put out in late fall.

In a warmer area downstream, down the river in Knoxville, with some kind of heat island from the city plus many, many cars going by each day, a tea noisette (Duch. de Auerstadt) had great growth and bloom. Mine from the same source struggles.

If you grow Chinas easily, it's worth trying the simpler noisettes as well as R. moschata (for its fragrance and elegance). If you're in an area with great heat (for your zone) and most of your HT canes make it through almostall winters, try a tea noisette or two.

Much luck, they are worth the effort.

I live 2 hours from Chamblees and I too get a thrill just driving into the driveway, anticipating a couple of hours spent looking at [and buying] roses. I was there the first of March when nothing was blooming - cant wait to get back there now! We are going to Tyler Sunday to the Azalea Trail and wont have time for Chamblees, but I am going back by myself to see the blooms. The Tyler Municipal Rose Garden is really a must see! They have 2 "idea gardens" that are wonderful and I never tire of strolling through the beautiful gardens and seeing roses I normally just see in photos. It takes me a whole day to do both these places - and time out for lunch at Mercado's - THE best mexican food!!

I would love to visit Chamblees. But to address your question about Noisettes, I grow Madame Alfred Carriere, it must be..well it's way over my head, not sure of the exact height.
It's grafted, only died back to the ground one very cold winter a few years ago. It's flexible enough to bend down a bit in the winter which seems to help, though this year I just left it standing there and it's fine-but we had a mild winter. It seems to get more hardy as it ages, if that's possible.
