The problem is what will the dormant eyes under the leaves you twist out do?

I've had plants that I just pulled/twisted etc and it worked and others that just made more of the same sport/reversion.

I think this cultivar will try to revert easily.

I really don't want to dig it up....can I take a knife and cut out that section like coring a head of lettuce?
Yeah....sure I can!! LOL! It's my hosta...I'll try it and let you all know next spring! Unless someone has a better idea....

If you can, score down around the reverting eye with a steak knife and excise just that section.

If your eye offends you pluck it out.

If you are going to try to excise it in place try this:

Take a hose and fairly carefully wash off the dirt where this eye is so you can see clearly what you are cutting. It may take a couple of days to get it as clean as you want, then let it dry.

This is how I've excised sports in the ground, my method is to leave it in place but separated or "rossed" because I wanted to keep it but you don't want to keep it so cut it out. Make a pie shaped cut just like rossing.

whatever you do.. do something.. try the easy way this fall ... now ...

if it doesn't work ... try again in spring ...

in my sand ... if the sand is super dry .... the plant will break off at the crown .. and you may or may not get the dormant buds as noted ...

after 2.5 inches of rain last week ... i have found that the whole eye plus roots comes out ... go figure on that ...

tape the offender together... run both hands down as low as you can go ... set you feet one behind the other ... and gently apply pressure until something gives ....if you put both feet next to each other.. there is a good chance that when it snaps.. you will end up on your butt .... lets avoid such.. in case the neighbors are watching.. lol ..

the blue should be blue angel ...

i do not recommend cutting a wedge of pie out of it... i have had more problems with that causing severe reversion of size .. than with any other method.. besides its august.. and if you don't properly sterilize... you might intro rot into the equation ...

It's possible that I'm imagining this, but didn't someone last year say that they used one of those tulip bulb planter things to get an unwanted eye out of one of their hostas that was sporting? They just put it over the offending eye and pushed down on it until it was broken loose and could pull it out?

A tulip planter would be too big and can you imagine threading the leaves of the excised piece through the hole in a bulb planter???....and I can't Ross it out by cutting a wedge because it's more into the center of the plant...
I'll start the hose so I can do it the lettuce coring thing this afternoon....and what I think I will do is set the excised plant into a container of water and let it grow roots. I mean if I get most of the crown it'll do that and I will have the best of both worlds. An undisturbed Guardian Angel and a plain blue whatever.

Ken is right as always, cutting on a plant can easily lead to a smaller plant the next year. The question is what do you want and what price you are willing to pay.

I don't have Guardian Angel, does it start blue before it developes the white center?

Are you sure that it is really a solid eye? I ask because Guardian Angel comes up with a whitish, misted center and then eventually can turn solid blue as the season progresses. I would hate to have you try and remove an eye that had simply greened/blued up for the season.

Of course, if it was solid blue first thing in the spring then yes, it is a solid reversion back to Blue Angel.

I think that is just fast growing new foliage that has greened up for the season. Chances are it will come up normal in the spring, so I would leave it alone for now and then check it again in the spring.

Guardian Angel does this, especially in hot areas.

Ok....I'll leave it....and see what happens in the spring.
I may move it in the spring any how. That's that area that is so full of that quartz mulch that the idiots put in 50 years ago!...Literally 50 years ago! That was put in in the fall of 1957!...And I am still fighting the damnable stuff! Think several times before you ever ever put in rock mulch!
