When Ants Attack Apple Trees

I have young apple orchard, in a rural area and much to my dismay, I found many of the trees overrun with ants.

Before you say they were nursing aphids, hear me out; they were not. In fact these thatch ants were eating and carting off the new tender buds and apple blossoms, stripping the branches bare.

I had never seen anything like it. I don't spray, so I placed tanglefoot on the trunk to impede their continuing feast.

Has anyone ever had a problem with thatch ants eating fresh vegetation on fruit trees?
