When caterpillars attack

While checking out my apple trees this weekend I was shocked to discover that the top half of my Monark Arkansas apple tree was gone! Well, the branches were still there, but all of the leaves were gone. Every single one! (Actually, there are a couple fragments of a couple leaves remaining, but you get my point.) Luckily, all the apples were on the lower half of the tree and the culprits hadn't done too much damage down there yet.

HereÂs a shot of the tree. Note the bare branches above and the healthy leaves below.

HereÂs a shot of the culprits. Does anyone know what they are? I hand picked 100 or so of them off and crushed them, but IÂd like to prevent them from attacking next year. All of my apples are bagged so I havenÂt sprayed anything since just after petal fall. Interestingly, out of the 7 varieties of apples that I have, the Monark Arkansas was the only one that got attacked.

Thanks,

Bart
