What's in bloom in your garden this week, May 23rd?

Sunny day for a change... In bloom today are:

dwarf bearded irises

strawberries

lily of the valley

dogwood

a few late purple tulips

Forget me not

lilacs

narcissi

bleeding hearts

buttercups

Honesty/Pope's money

NO dandelions (they were mowed!)

It's this time of year where the large amount fo crab apple and Kwanzan cherries I have are done, and so it's a bit of a let down for a few weeks, till the roses come in strong. Maybe I should plant some late lilacs in large quantities to carry me over to the rose season. Just one tree in bloom of course, is much more bloom than a border of flowers.

I saw a very nice pink Wisteria when passing the local plant seller today, pruned as a weeping tree. I wonder if I should look into planting a couple of those.

White campion (which I don't - at least not as much as I've got)
And the ladyslippers are back! :)

This year I am committing myself to learning more about the area natives. On my woodland walk today I found garlic mustard, and some small shrub with white, 4-petaled flowers that I would have sworn was a wild rose, but it had no thorns. I couldn't find it in either my Peterson's or the Ct. Botanical Society website. Not too many wildflowers in bloom right now - more in my yard than in the woods, LOL.

And the stars of my patio - a pot of tulips that has been in bloom not only for two weeks, but through two weeks of rain, sometimes very hard rain. I can't believe these things are still standing. Gorgeous! And deutzia Pink Minor. I always have my doubts about this because it's got kind of a messy habit, but then it blooms and I'm in love!

Thanks Nate! Windhaven, Cedrus deodara is generally hardy to about 8-12 degrees. Some are a little more so, others a bit less. We rarely see temps below 20 degrees here in Winter and never below 0(farinheit), so it probably has very little chance in zone 5. It is indeed grafted on standard which is helping it shape up better. The purple plant is a purple flowering heather. Not sure of their hardiness, but they are wonderful companion plants to conifers and come in a huge variety of colors. Thank you Edwin for the confirmation/correct and though I will need to double-check I believe all four seedlings I am growing from Jason are original plants. -Will

Thanks for the additional nice compliments, we all like flattery for our hard labors of love. Dave the naming of my garden wasn't something I was very comfortable with originally but it makes it easier then saying the gardens of that firefighter gardener guy. Hobbiton is a fantasy realm from the world-wide acclaimed masterpiece novels by J.R.R. Tolkien: Lord of the Rings(also wrote The Hobbit). It's one of the greatest pieces of literature I have ever read and my parents read it to me as a very young child. It's deep in my heart and my tribute to the books are naming my garden after the green, happy, gardening-heavy and friendly neighborhood of most of the hobbits in the books "Hobbiton". Additionally with the focus on miniature plants, some even carrying names like 'Hobbit', 'Pixie Dust', 'Troll', 'Elf', 'Goblin' and plenty of Dwarves, it seemed appropriate. As to 'Horstmann', I would say that we have the same cultivar but yours was trained, staked and pruned early in life, whereas mine is a side-grafted specimen that hasn't figured out a leader yet. I haven't decided whether I will prune it or not - and in either case, I think it will spread eventually. Cedrus libani var. atlantica are generally wide-growing plants, narrow being the very rare exception. Your specimen is beautifully narrow now but may require some pruning to keep it tight over the years. Out to water I go! -Will

Moved the wood pile from the east side of the garage to the new wood crib on the new farmerÂs porch. Turned over the now naked soil that was there and planted hybrid tea and climbing roses, euonymus, dwarf mugo pine, Asiatic and hybrid lilies, dwarf reblooming daylilies and some annual Â marigolds and dusty millers. Roses will probably get moved, as I rethink my garden plan in light of the changes in the construction of the addition on the house. Divided the three, ancient giant clumps of hostas that were where the new addition is going and made 20 smaller clumps that I planted in front of the farmerÂs porch on the north side of the house and the rest of the north wall. They should do well there and will be supplemented with seven ÂnamedÂ hostas and some astilbe (the led zeppelin plant) on the way from Bluestone. Moved some giant, ancient phlox from the construction site and moved to the south side of the main part of the house. Moved some basic, orange daylilies from in front of the house to along the drive, on the hillside, and down by the mailbox on the road. Used the blade on my heavy duty weed whacker to cut down about 100 sumac trees that had grown up under my power line. Did it two years ago and some of the new ones were already 15 feet high and getting into the wires. Also cleared out a lot of wild rose and have the cuts to prove it. Retrenched both sides of the drive on the hill Â clearing out the old leaves, weed and collected sediment and rebuilding where the rear tires of the farmerÂs tractor smooshed my ditches. My Kubota does most of the heavy lifting, but thereÂs still a fair amount of shovel digging. Went out in the rain yesterday and transplanted about 50 clumps of sedum onto the bare slope above one of the ditches, which is just under a stone wall near the top of the hill, to keep all the dirt from running back into the ditch. Planted various perennials that had arrived in the mail. Weeded, weeded, weeded. Smacked at black flies. narcnh

Not much. Mostly dandelions! But I do have rock cress & aubrieta; a pretty blue/purple weed that looks sort of like ajuga but the leaves are different, sand cherry, and viola King Henry still hanging in. My favorite polemonium - blue, with a grape soda scent - is budding. I'm puzzled by my daffs, which have sent up foliage, but no buds. Hmmm. Rhodies aren't blooming either, & that seems late to me. Weld or woad, I'm not sure which, that I wintersowed last year, is about to bloom in the herb garden. I hope for a more interesting report next week!

Roses and iris.

Rosa spinossisima and mostly Iris pallida.

The roses currently blooming are Glory of Edzell, R. hugonis, R. spinossisima 'Altaica', Mary Queen of Scots, Therese Bugnet and Jens Munk. The rugosas are getting close, but the current stars are the Scots.

Camassia is blooming for the first time. This is probably this year's big surprise. I've never grown this before, and don't know how I missed it for so long.

Peony 'Coral Fay' is blooming. This is a fernleaf hybrid that doesn't go dormant quite as early. Quite a striking red.

I had my frist rose bloom of the season - Souvenir de Ste. Anne. It seems *awfully* early for a rose here, but not complaining! This is a gorgeous rose.
