Questions about using tape when planting

Ok, I dug about 30 holes tonight and I'm gonna plant some new hostas tomorrow.

I have questions about using tape during planting. Ken, you mentioned that you use tape....

I assume you mean around the petioles?

What kind of tape? Scotch, masking, painter's, packaging?

Do you "tighten up" the shape, or tape them at current positions?

And do you use tape on smaller or more compact shaped plants that are close to the ground anyway?

I think you had said to leave the tape on for a couple weeks, right?

Thanks ahead of time. You all have been such a help as I dive into the deep end of hostadom! And special thanks to you Ken... you are such a wealth of information and provide no-nonsense advice!

Knew that only after my stupid (that is a kind word for her) mail lady banged on my door last year and told me to stop reusing stamps (which I wasnt, they were new, but the edge of them had some tape on them where I had taped the end of the envelope shut and some tape was on the stamps. (this isnt why I dont like that mail lady, she had also informed me that she would no longer pick up bubble envelopes from my house as she didnt want to clutter her maibag with them, she also was throwing my mail in my flowerbed instead of putting it in my box and was just really crappy to me all the time. I called the postmaster twice to tattle on her and finally told him I was going to slap the snot out of her if she darkened my doorway ever again. She was put on a different route for her own protection and my sanity. The new mailman was a sweetie and he picked up all of my mail and took care of things for me. I called the postmaster again to tell him that the new guy was a sweetheart and doing a wonderful job. Apparently a lot of people had problems with the old mail lady and I nearly got a parade in my honor for getting her off our route. lol. The clear tape to cover the envy is great and they do last longer.

Question about using plant light indoor

No 24 -7 lighting to much like any plant they also need a dimmer to darker time as well. Pointers: during summer and as often as you can ( rain free days) would open the window and leave bug screen down as heat generated from the light and bouncing off the window as well is something your plant tops wont really like without moving air . This changes mid fall and well into winter winter Assuming you already get a max of 6 hours of natural light from outside you want to time the light to turn on about 30 minutes after the sun departs the area where plants are and time it off at sun set or just prior to.

Question about thermostat for heating tape/mat

Ok here is some more info I got an Agritape (11 inch by 10 feet) second hand, but no instruction booklet. It is from Ken-bar(dot)com. On the cord is a label that says the tape must be plugged into a thermostatic control unit and must be covered with a standard mesh aluminum window screening and the screen must be grounded. Where do you get a thermostatic control unit? Calistoga, does your thermostat have a grounding option? Also the aluminum window screening. I have a big rol of alumium screening that I bought to replace my window screens, but never did. Can I use that or do I need something else. If I can use this, how do I ground it. I would like to build a bench and put this tape on it to provide bottom heat for my plant trays, but I want to do it in a safe way. People on this forum are very knowledgeable, so I am pretty sure someone can help me out here. Thanks in advance.

Question about transferring tapes to DVDs

I'm sorry I can't help you on most of that, but I can tell you that you should record onto DVD-Rs, not DVD-RWs. RWs are rewriteable, and the technology that makes them alterable also makes them less able to maintain good data. If you made a DVD-R and DVD-RW of the same tape (assuming the same quality of DVD blanks), the DVD-R would last considerably longer. Same for CDs, too, if anyone is wondering.

then again .. i just moved about 20 clumps... and skipped the tape...i just didn't care ...

and then got 8 inches of rain last week ... and none of them flopped ... go figure on that ..

listen its September ... they are going to get ugly .. the move will speed that ... don't worry about it.. just get it done..

the best thing the tape will do .. is get the leaves out of the way while you dig... and give you leverage for lifting out the clump ...

Here is what I use - garden velcro. And it's reuseable. I also use it to tie my tomato plants to the cages. As the plant grows you can move it around. At the end of the year I remove the velcro and roll it up to reuse the following year. I got it at Home Depot for about $2.50.

Teresa, thanks for the information, Butch, it works as long as you don't use Duct Tape LOL.
Ken, I don't tape mine, for the simple reason, when it is time to move them it usually is time to also divide them.
