Careful when taping SABSE closed... don't cover stamp with tape!

Hey guys,

If you ever use extra clear tape to secure the end of a SABSE that you have received in the mail, please make sure that you do NOT accidentally wrap the extra tape over the top and cover the stamps. I was recently told that wrapping the clear tape over the stamps voided the postage and they would not accept the stamps on the SABSE. I was asked to see if I could remove the tape but it ended up tearing the stamps. The postal employee gave me a warning not to do that again and finally gave me credit for the postage this time. But she won't do it again if it happens again.

If you didn't already know this, it may be a good thing to keep in mind when you are getting ready to mail out the seed trades.

Also if you cover the front of your envelopes with clear packing tape, it makes it easier to remove the stamps and old address label.

Oh Carol,
I so agree with you. Often when I have a fresh new bubble envy, I will cover large areas with clear tape for the 'To' address, 'from' address, and the postage stamps. When I sent them for sasbe, they were often returned with all the clear tape removed...instead of just the info labels that had been stuck on to the clear tape.

If the clear tape had been left in place, the envy would have remained intact and like new for a very long time.

All sounds great. Question: Do you lay the tape flat? Is the tape folded over with the seed inside? Do the roots go through the lower layer to get to soil, or do they fan out growing between the two layers? Does this slow them down if they are laying on top of a paper layer? How about the shout going up. If there is a paper layer over the top of the seed, can the new shout push up through this layer of paper, or do they go sideways looking for a chance to go up freely? As they push up do they push the paper up on top of the shout? It seems that if the seeds are between two layers of paper, it would change their growth shape.

Mark, I've been busy and haven't checked this forum for a few days. I like the rubber tape because it sticks to itself. The grafting rubbers are harder to get started and want to unwind more during the grafting process for me. The rubber tape stretches nice and just seems so easy to work with. It's almost like it was made for grafting. I do cut the rubber tape in half longways, so the strips are about as wide as grafting rubbers. As I mentioned I also like that rubber tape doesn't stick to the bark. I like to remove the tape to see if the buds callused over. After I examine them I use a very small paint brush and a bit of paint to paint over the callus portion (but not the bud) of the graft. This helps me easily identify (at a glance) where the budded portion is the following spring, as well as protecting the callus portion from drying out. That said, it's all personal preference. Some people like grafting rubbers, some vinyl electrical tape, some even use masking tape. Same with anti-dessicants. Some like grafting compound, some Doc Farwells, some melted paraffin wax, some use a paper bag, plastic from a bread sack, etc. My personal choices are rubber splice tape and parafilm. The parafilm is nice because it seems to breathe the right amount. I've used plastic from a bread sack before, but it holds too much water and the buds get soggy.

So ive been in the trade since I was 14 hanging on weekends and after school ( family ) im now 33 and have been full time since highs school, I have over 15 years of solid exp as a piece worker, hanging and finish, seeing someone say if they can hang 70 sheets in a week they are happy makes me wonder if they really know how much money they could make if they learned how to "piece work"??!!.... my brother and I charge $25 per sheet for a basic house with 8 ft cielings, if its a house with more detail we could charge up to $35 per sheet, that's just labor, if we supply material its anywhere from $50 up to $70....the location plays a factor also....houses on the coast tend to be a higher price....anyways say we have a house that's 150 sheets ( 12 foot sheets ALWAYS ) we hang it in 2 days and tape, finish, sand in 5 days.... hanging is always faster money cause your only doing it once! so say we are charging 25 we split it in half 12.50 to hang 12.50 to tape...so that's $1,875 we split 50 50 that we made in 2 days.... we always get a check after hanging then again after finish....and most of our contractors are right there to pay when the last screw is in then when the dust hits the floor......if we are charging 35 we would take 15 to hang 20 to tape....we also do commercial work when we want a break from houses....and that's through another bigger drywall company.... but you can make a lot more piece working commercial stand ups....we mostly tape when it comes to that but we can do anywhere from 350 - 500 sheets a week 10' stand ups, but since its through a different company and not for our own we may get 12-14 a sheet.... but still 350 sheets a week at 12 is a 2,000$$ week!! ( its not always like that but it can be!!) and if your thinking well why doesn't every0ne do that then.... cause not just anyone can!! even guys that are good drywallers and do a great clean job and really know the skill doesn't mean they know to "flow" and hang 80 sheets a day or tape 400 a week.....and just an fyi, our work is by far top quality so no just because we run and go fast doesn't mean we "butch" anything!!.... its called pride and wanting to be the best at what you do!

Here is what I would do: - Space the shelves real close, to have the tapes on their sides. (Perhaps IÂ¢d need extra shelves though - if I could not get any IÂ´d have a display area in the vacant space : framed art comes to mind for it) - Make boxes out of cardboard (I bet this wouldnÂ´t cost much) open at the top, long as the shelves are deep, wide as the tapes are tall, tall as the tapes are wide. The labeled sides of the tapes would be seen from the top of the box (hope this makes sence). - You can make them as elaborate as you want, cover them in something patterned or colored to match you decor, attach handles, label them... They would function like drawers. - You could label the boxes alphabetically (provided you sort the tapes that way), or by genre, or using numbers (only this way youÂ´d have to compile a list with the titles and the numbers they correspond to). - Drawer like boxes make it easy to take out AND put back in. In my experience, it is a PITB to have VHS tapes standing like books even 2 rows deep, let alone 3! Maria

Knew that only after my stupid (that is a kind word for her) mail lady banged on my door last year and told me to stop reusing stamps (which I wasnt, they were new, but the edge of them had some tape on them where I had taped the end of the envelope shut and some tape was on the stamps. (this isnt why I dont like that mail lady, she had also informed me that she would no longer pick up bubble envelopes from my house as she didnt want to clutter her maibag with them, she also was throwing my mail in my flowerbed instead of putting it in my box and was just really crappy to me all the time. I called the postmaster twice to tattle on her and finally told him I was going to slap the snot out of her if she darkened my doorway ever again. She was put on a different route for her own protection and my sanity. The new mailman was a sweetie and he picked up all of my mail and took care of things for me. I called the postmaster again to tell him that the new guy was a sweetheart and doing a wonderful job. Apparently a lot of people had problems with the old mail lady and I nearly got a parade in my honor for getting her off our route. lol. The clear tape to cover the envy is great and they do last longer.

I learned the hard way on this one. I took a SASBE to the post office only to have them tell me that I would have to put new stamps on the mailer because I had covered my dollar stamp with clear tape.

another thing, if ya have little ones, who like to put your stamps on other stuff, i use the double sided tape on the back of the stamp, its the one from sams club, so its really thin and really sticky!! LOVE it!! so i can slowly take the stamps off she puts everywhere and use them, for a while there i was loosing stamps!! ahhhhh somehow that child of mine finds all these stamps no matter where i find them!! LOL :')) and ya, i tape BEFOR i stamp so i don't have that happen. LOL
another thing, if you go to your p.o. you can "hopefully" get a copy of the template they use for postage, i use that! i cut out the pieces needed to be cut out, and glued it to the cardboard, and go by that so i know tht its gonna cost me only 1 stamp to send my seeds. as long as it will fit thru the bottom slit it will cost you one stamp. if it goes thru the top one its a flat rate. been talking to chris ( post lady) LOL

Yep, I too have lost lots of stamps to my twins "sticker madness". Lol, thanks for the tip. Last year they got into several of my group swap mailers and I had to replace those stamps, argh. This year I'll guard the mailers too, not just the seeds (that was their target the prior year, LOL.) Luckily they are 4 1/2 now and are finally learning "you don't touch Mommy's seed stuff."

And I did learn about taping over through trial and error, too.
When possible, I now put the stamps at the opposite end as the opening, and have been known to even rearrange old mailers to do this. I especially prefer to do it this way with group swaps because it is sometimes safer to put the postage on right away to avoid misplacing & mix-ups before I start the mayhem of seed sorting.
