Groundcovers for self weeding gardens.

There are gardens that are set up as mulched showplaces that showcase each plant or bed while keeping each from intermixing. This topic is NOT for that type of garden. If you have a garden that is packed with overlapping species and flowering times and would like to eliminate weeding as much as possible. Then here are some groundcover ideas. Most hardy perennials will push right through low groundcovers and when planting annuals you just clear out the groundcover in the area you plant for that season. The groundcovers make it very hard for most weeds to compete while providing another blooming time and texture to the garden. I find the best effect is often made by planting different beds and letting them fight it out. The ground cover that likes that space best wins or you have yet another mix of bloom times. Some of the best groundcover are invasive and some folks consider weeds in their own right. But used well they make the garden rich and easier to maintain. Violets are one of the best. Sun or shade, once established they can be pulled for clearance around other plants if needed. They are easy to break up using the corms to replant as beds. Good as a mid level groundcover. Creeping jenny is great for low groundcover. Full to part shade its yellow starflower, trailing, overlapping habit covers the ground or hangs down walls. Retains ground moisture in dry areas. When thick it locks out most weeds but is easy to plant with annuals and perennials. AjugaâÂÂs purple and blue makes a great bed with many plants, just keep it from being able to enter the yard with edging. Snow on the mountain is nice with daylilies but only where it can be mowed to restrain it to a stand alone bed. Do not let it into a mixed garden! Vinca works well for shady areas. Pachysandra competes too much and can overgrow low and midlevel perennials but is nice for shrubs and wild areas. Here in New England we have an abundance of ferns that work wonder in the garden if used well. They grow well in shady areas making it even shadier and harder for weeds to get started while providing a background and cuttings. Ostrich plume and woody ferns are my favorites for moist and dry soils. Native plants such as dogtooth lily and even mosses can add to a weed freer garden Do you have some favorite groundcovers for self weeding?
