Thanks for the suggestions; they were great to read and definitely things I'll keep in mind if I have a similar problem in the future. As to this situation, as it turns out I had run out of gas (I know, I know). The thing is, I DID hit the opposing side a bit hard, and did in fact crack the upper hood (which I've since fixed using some fiberglass underneath and sanding/repainting on top). But I ran out of gas just as I was turning, so the two things happened at exactly the same time. Now you guys can't of course know this, but I'm actually a really handy guy and I know my way around tools, etc. really well. If the damn thing had done the same symptoms when I was on level ground I'd have instantly realized I was out of gas, but the two things happening together put me down a road of assumption that I shouldn't have gone down. If you like spiders and UFs at all, you really might look at some by either Dan Bachman, Margo Reed or Jim Murphy. While some are new and more expensive, there are a lot that are very reasonably priced ( AFTER AWHILE CROCODILE, RED HILL, TOODLELOO KANGAROO,LATER ALLIGATOR) A couple of other older and very reliable late bloomers are SANDRA ELIZABETH- it is a rather old fashioned buttery yellow, but it is considered the marker for very late blooms. It is reliably very late almost everywhere. Also, Sanford Roberts POINT OF VIEW is a great ML-L bloomer. It is a big red and very impressive in a clump. I did a thread or two on some L-VL bloomers and pictured some of these daylilies - one was earlier this week and another was a couple of weeks ago. Good luck with your quest! Remember that hybridizers can only register daylilies as they bloom in their home gardens. They might not ( and often don't) bloom at the same time in completely different climates!

Hi from NJ- Cathie! Deb- my old home is probably not what you're picturing. I agree that Cranford has beautiful old homes, it's what made the DH and I move there in the first place. But my old home is a true fixer-upper, and it will be years before we get it to where we want it- time and money constraints. Someone in the '50's decided to panel all the walls and cut all the trim and windowsills (what a sin!!). We found 7 boarded up windows, and a fireplace behind the paneling. They also tiled over the wood floors in 2 of the bedrooms. The outside is dreary gray asbestos shingle- the original stained wood shingles are underneath, but in this economy who knows when we will get to that. I still consider myself lucky that we have a home in a nice town with a lot of charm to raise my children. I agree it is really nice to be able to walk to town, attend parades and the halloween contests and participate in other activities the community has to offer. Fivefootzero- Hopefully my daughter will be in morning kindergarten so she can go to aftercare at her nursery school on the days I'm working. I'll have to look for you when she gets to first grade-LOL

I agree with Peter -- sounds like you have enough soil covering the spuds. In my experience, YG's do not set particularly high, so one hilling followed by mulch works well. Grass clippings are fine for mulch. So is hay or straw (though in my area, straw brings invasive weeds, while hay does not.. Hay just brings the weeds I already know and love.) So if you want to cover the hills some more, you can use a mulch cover. I normally wait until after a good rain to apply the mulch, since it will block some rain, but also hold moisture in. Some people only use mulch, and no soil mounding. So with hilling once, not twice, you'll be using a combination of methods. Sounds like you're off to a great start, with them so tall already!
