OK, I'm getting really annoyed with Lates not being Lates

It seems that the description isn't quite always accurate and that some listed as L or ML are really EM or M. How is a person supposed to order Late bloomers if it isn't accurate?

My choices are to either save up to order a few from Olallie since they describe exactly when they bloom up in VT and for how long OR to go to a daylily farm in PA or CT (none in NJ) to see what is just starting to bloom now and then buy it.

I'm so frustrated! Does anyone know of another vendor that describes them accurately or in detail?

I only have Jen Melon and Final Touch not yet blooming but almost ready to.

I'm in daylily withdrawl! Since all of mine were new this year they are almost all done blooming or just about done. Green, all I see is green.

Natanya, I've just really taken interest in true late bloomers and I think the best way to choose is to see what's actually blooming in your area. Potted nursery varieties will often fool ya!

I landed a few lates in a batch of freebies last year, one looks like 'Frans Hals' and there's a tall yellow one I believe to be 'Autumn King'. Not terribly impressed with either (yet) but I am moving them from the folk's house to my place as there's at least a week's worth on both I dug.

I'll be visiting a small daylily farm this week, maybe two but aside from some varieties I want that are likely finished I'll be making some choices for lates in this area based on what's still blooming. I'll post upon my return.

If you like spiders and UFs at all, you really might look at some by either Dan Bachman, Margo Reed or Jim Murphy. While some are new and more expensive, there are a lot that are very reasonably priced ( AFTER AWHILE CROCODILE, RED HILL, TOODLELOO KANGAROO,LATER ALLIGATOR) A couple of other older and very reliable late bloomers are SANDRA ELIZABETH- it is a rather old fashioned buttery yellow, but it is considered the marker for very late blooms. It is reliably very late almost everywhere. Also, Sanford Roberts POINT OF VIEW is a great ML-L bloomer. It is a big red and very impressive in a clump. I did a thread or two on some L-VL bloomers and pictured some of these daylilies - one was earlier this week and another was a couple of weeks ago. Good luck with your quest!

Remember that hybridizers can only register daylilies as they bloom in their home gardens. They might not ( and often don't) bloom at the same time in completely different climates!

I bought the tree from a well respected nursery. The other trees I bought from them are doing OK but they were balled and burlaped. They do irrigate their trees. The pot seemed to be in good condition and there wasn't any visible damage on the tree. That's all the background I have. I can't really get out to the tree right now to see how wet the ground is but I'm sure its getting plenty of water, just not the once a week deep watering that is recommended. Hmmm I wondering if its because of the severe root bound it had. Do trees planted in the fall usually take off in the spring or do they sometimes stuggle like this to get going? In the future I think I'll make sure to buy trees before their leaves drop. Thanks for the help Ken.

cut it off below the break... although it is attached and still growing, disease can enter where the wound is... As for your other leafless canes, if they are green, leave them be, if they are brown or black, cut them off below the dark color... Years from now your rose will be better off if you constantly get rid of any canes that aren't top notch...

As a former property manager I dealt with it incessantly- even had the problem myself with newlyweds above me & a squeaky bed. After a month of 30 minute lovemaking at 2:00 A. M. I called to let her listen to a recording of their "activities" & mentioned it awakening us every night. She was shocked, embarrassed & apologetic; the following day DH called me to say a new bed had just been delivered upstairs. Until government intervention, managers could segregate by age, life style....families, singles under 30, over 30, elderly, etc. in defined areas which made for more peaceful conditions for everyone. Once HUD laws went into effect, "Housing Assisted Property" or not, threat of lawsuit (very, very costly to defend) removed that option. Residents like you pay the price by experiencing what you are. This is what I advised residents try first.... Introduce yourself, ask if your normal noise has ever bothered them, invite them to let you know if it should, then tell them that since they seem to be such nice people, you're sure they haven't realized how disturbing their evening, night noise is to you. I never saw a lease that failed to contain a clause mentioning right of enjoyemnt of peace & quiet. If first suggestion doesn't work, you could ask other nearby neighbors if they've been disturbed- if so, ask if they'd be willing to complain to manager too. Managers love & want to retain Good residents...but can't fix a problem of which they're unaware. On my last assignment, a very quiet shy single lady complained about military man w/2 extremely noisy little boys who moved into tri-level townhouse next door to her. I asked if she'd gone over to speak to the Dad about it. She said, "Oh c'mon!! ...do you seriously think I'm going to try to talk to a man who named his kids Remington & Colt?" marquest - I beg to differ about retail profit margins. At least for clothes, I mean I work in the fashion industry, and you do not find $400 retail dresses purchased at a $1.99 wholesale price. Most profit margins hover around 40-60% for contemporary-luxury clothing. So for your $400 dress will probably cost the department store about $285 (40% markup). It's true that they do not need to sell so much of these to earn a hefy profit, especially if the item is more expensive. But big department/retail stores also cut their losses by charging the vendors anything that was discounted or left unsold. Essentially, vendors have to obliged because of the promise of their products' future in the store. I just gave a analogy of the apparel business, I'm not sure about plants. But I would consider plants as perishable, and retail stores definitely charge back the vendors for losses at a fixed amount - so at the end of the day, store wins - vendor loses. The thing that why this business still continues is because large vendors/nurseries like altman/sgm growers are able to make more by selling their plants in bulk. They save alot on shipping cost/store front and marketing cost because the bbs does all of that for them, and distribute for them. Sometimes when you do the math, it makes sense to sell more even with chargebacks. Hence, the return glufers despite a community rallying against it for the well being of plants because selling a product at full price (profit) is the imperative over anything else. Let's say you are a big nursery -- you sell to HD, Walmart, Lowes (Let's just use one plant for simplicity sake -- Crassula Jade Ovata Gollum, because it more common) Here will be your orders: HD - 2 Million units at $0.50 each ($1 Million) Walmart - 4 Million units at $0.45 each ($1.8 Million) Lowes - 1 Million units at $0.50 each ($0.5 Million) That's a total of $3.3 Million if you sell everything, let's say sales is good this year/season and only 10% of your plants die and you have to give the stores half-full price discounts/chargebacks -- that only amounts to $150k-$300k, you still make $3 Million just for 1 plant! You do not to incur any cost but just produce good quality and healthy plants, and hope they sell in the stores. vs A small boutique nursery/garden (that produces the same plant instead of buying from wholesaler for simplicity sake) You produce 100k Plants, you sell them max at $3 each (that's the max I will pay for a Jade 'Gollum), You will make $300k if you sell all of it Let's use the same constant as the previous case -- you only sell 90% of your plants because it's a good year. You only make $270k! That's great right? But now you have to account for cost of running the store, rent, marketing to attract customers etc. We use 1 season to break it down. Rent - $10,000 per month (1 season = 3 months = $30,000) Utilities - $5,000 per month (1 season = 3 months = $15,000) Marketing - $20,000 in total (this is a conservative number considering if you say publish ads on the newspaper/magazines/participate in shows) You will need at least $65,000 to run your business. You are only left with $205,000 to distribute your profits amongst yourself. You do the math. Sorry, I went on a crazy merchandising mode. But I just want to prove my point, big corporations like macdonalds don't care for you or your plants well-being. At the end of the day, it's a capitalist world and they only support sales and profits. This is why, I always try my best to support local communities and farmers market. I know it's pricier, but at least I know my money goes into support families and quality well being of animals/plants.

I am going through the same thing you are. I have some that are listed as extra earlies (Witch Stitchery, Breaking the Rules, Hawaiian Gold), but all bloomed around mid-June. I also have Classic Rose, which is listed as a late bloomer, but it bloomed mid-June also and is still blooming. Go figure...

It is frustrating, but it is understandable given the drastic climate differences.

I am struggling with the same thing with the "rebloomers". Out of 102 that are listed as rebloomers, I only have one that is reblooming so far (Thunder and Blazes), and nothing else even remotely looks like it's going to put up another scape.

As I learn more, I take those things into account and chalk it up to experience. Although I may run out of room before I learn what it's going to take to have a longer bloom season:)

I was surprised to see how different they are too. I was going to recommend a few to you that bloom late in my garden, but then I decided to look them up. I think the only one that is supposed to be late that I have is Final Touch, & it is dependably late. When Orchid Corsage, Siloam Harold Flickinger, Final Touch, So Lovely & Karen Sue, & they all started blooming between 7/5 & 7/9 signals to me that my bloom season is ending. Sll still have a few blooms left. Jen Melon started blooming 7/3 here & Cherry Cheeks started blooming 7/6, but they finished their bloom a few days ago.

Visiting daylily farms is exactly how I got my late bloomers, but not wanting to be limited to what the farms in my general area have to offer I also have visited farms in Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio...

I have rarely mailed ordered (twice) I like to see my daylilies up close and observe and take notes for possible purchases the following season. Sometimes purchasing double fans and sometimes purchasing large clumps, it usually depends on what they have to offer or as to if I'm uncertain how the coloring will be back in my garden in my soil ect.

We usually make a weekend of it with Mother going just for the outing, the sister going to shop and enjoy the hotel and me staking out the daylilies. I swing back by and pick up whatever I've purchased as we leave the area. A clump will remain okay slightly rinsed and put in a plastic kitchen bag for a couple days till planting.
