Hello all! You can say spring is coming if I come out of my hibernation and start posting this thread...

What is in bloom in your garden this week? Here I have:

early crocuses

snowdrops (since March 10th)

pussy willow

There's not one of those daylilies that I wouldn't welcome into my garden (I bet they'd be shocked at the temperature difference though(107 today). I love the color of Barny, and Ashwood Still Night looks so deep and velvety. But then there is Major General that looks luscious too. No, no. I just can't choose my favorite of these...Maryl

Brenda, Hooray for the tiny tomatoes and peppers! They won't stay small for long. If your onions seem behind, try giving them a shot of nitrogen fertilizer. They are heavy feeders. You can give them dried blood/blood meal if you garden organically or any pelleted form of lawn fertilizer that contains nitrogen only. They also need a consistent amount of moisture even if no rain is falling. Otherwise they stall and just sit there and refuse to grow. You can plant garlic this year, but just not right now. In our climate we can start planting garlic in the September-October time frame for harvest next June or thereabouts. I am so glad your husband is hanging in there and making his way through all the surgeries. Hopefully he'll soon be strong enough for the third one. I am glad to hear he's making good dietary changes, and that you make it more fun and more meaningful for him by growing fresh produce yourself. Fresh is so much more nutritious because nutrients degrade as 'fresh' produce is shipped across the country, and even around the world, to reach store shelves. I also think there is something that just "feels right" about eating food you've grown yourself whenever you can. Dorothy, I know. It made me laugh out loud at first, but after a while I was tired of it. When we got married in September of that year so very long ago, it was 102 degrees. I think they thought they'd gotten on an airplane and flown to H-E-L-L. After we moved here, my brother and sister-in-law and their kids came to visit that August. They were here for 3 days and our high temps while they were here were 110-111-112. It was a drought summer, so that year the humidity was very low when they were visiting, but it still was miserably hot, even if it was a dry heat (grinning). They can't stand our heat 'cause they aren't used to it, but then I can't tolerate their cold weather either. We were there on Memorial Day weekend one year, and it was 26 degrees in the morning when we got up early to go trout fishing. Another year, it was 70 degrees and misty on the Fourth of July. I had typical Texas summer clothes with me, so all I remember about the Fourth of July was that I was freezing and that the fireworks show was cancelled because of the rainy, foggy, misty weather. Hi again pm2! Those cinderblock beds were an absolute bear to build for me! The ground there is solid ledge, with maybe up to 3 inches of soil in spots. I had no help at all, and built the things with a shovel and a five gallon bucket to move the load of compost from the pile to the beds. It was a lot of work to make them level. Sooooo, once the bottom level was done, that was pretty much the hard part. The second layer was cake (although of course it meant filling with more soil/compost, bucket by stinking bucket!) I staggered them like bricks, and they are fairly stable. I also filled the holes with compost for added stability. It is great to be able to sit on the edge while working, and I also grow things in the holes. I think in the photos you can see what remains of alyssum and parsley. I love that deutzia too. My first and so far only deutzia, from Bluestone. Quite a beauty and if I recall correctly, rather long-lasting. The siberian iris were from a swap, and I want to say that they were from Sue (vtskiers). The lily - isn't it beautiful?! I'm a sucker for apricot-colored lilies and roses! I went outside and couldn't find a tag, and then came in to check my invoices. It may - MAY - be Fairest. I say that only because that seems to be the only lily I have that I can't find a picture of, lol! The pictures of other lilies on my invoice(s) don't match this lily, so I'm guessing it's Fairest - although the description says its a cross of an asiatic, and I thought this particular lily was a type of Oriental. Anyway, I will try to discover what it is. The caterpillar was some nasty thing that either stuck me or bit me, several times, before I even saw it, and made my hand swell. They were everywhere that day! I don't recall the name of it. (Gee, I'm beginning to realize that I'm pretty forgetful!) Where was I? Oh yeah, lol! I posted about it here and someone gave me an answer. But when I first saw it hanging off my hand, I didn't even think it was a living thing. I thought it was a piece of paper or something! And lastly, my camera is a Canon EOS Rebel XT. My DH plays with it more than I do, and it really takes some nice photos. Hope Santa brings a camera for you! :) Dee

Thanks for the link, maybe this is the year I'll get one. :-) I was looking at a new map of the zones in Mass the other day and it clearly indicated that my area is now 6b instead of 6a like I thought I was. I wondered if that means you are zone 7a where you are? If your crocus just opened, then it would make sense that mine would be behind you. I also have a pretty heavy leaf mulch in some areas. Thanks. It isn't really spring until you hear the birds singing in the morning.

Hi Belle! I've been waiting for this thread, lol! Glad to see you again!

I've got:

snowdrops (in bloom over a month now - love these babies!)
crocus
iris reticulata
hellebore (just one!)

I'm surprised at all the stuff that's poking out of the ground already - seems like things are coming up earlier than usual this year.

Pussywillow bloomed. The crocus are up but not in flower yet. And the pachysandra is blooming with clusters of little white flowers.

Nothing yet... I'm prowling my neighborhood every day and nobody else has anything blooming yet either. Obviously I need to plant snowdrops this fall. *G*

I'm SO glad you're back! It really must be spring ... although it feels suspiciously likewinter.

Here's what I've got:
snowdrops; Winter aconite - almost gone by; Crocus (the small, early ones, in all colors); Hellebores (stinking, Christmas Rose and Lenten Rose); Heath (pink, purple, and white); Witch Hazel (Arnold's Promise, the Jelena and Diane are pretty well gone by); Jasminium nudiflorum; Cyclamen coum (their first year, I really hope they stick around).

Waiting for Dawn Viburnum, but I really have to use my imagination to say it's blooming, because the buds are barely showing color.

I have a few crocus and a number of daffodils with buds on them, which seems very early for them to be up. They are on a slight incline in the sunniest part of the yard, so the leaves blow off that area.

We planted the species crocus last year, and I am surprised not to see them come up yet. I see what looks suspiciously like something has been digging in that area. Could squirrels have dug them up? I thought no animals like crocus?

Like Gata, up here in the semifrozen north I have crocuses and reticulated irises blooming up against sheltered east or south facing foundations. And my vernal witch hazel.

Welcome back, Belle Isis. I remember you were on vacation last year for quite awhile.

I haven't even finished all my spring clean-up by a long shot, but there are a few white crocus popping up.

Hello all, nice to be back. With all the activity going around, I guess I should also launch the other thread of "What happened in your garden this week". I'll start it on Monday.

I am still doing my spring cleaning, or should I say.... my fall cleaning. But it's going well, I still have the upper hand on my garden!

I haven't seen my iris reticulata yet, which is a bit of a surprise. Things are warming up very slowly, I guess it's the same for all of us. I hope no one ate them.... and my rose "Marechal Niel" is also in bloom but that's inside, so of course it's cheating...
