Philly Flower Show 2007 (Photos)

We visited the Philly Flower Show last Thursday. It was fabulous! The theme this year was "Legends of Ireland" so many exhibits had an Irish theme. The crowds were manageable this year as compared to 2005 when we last went. There was so much to see that we did not feel the 4 hours we spent at the show was enough but it was closing time when we left so this couldn't be helped. I've picked the best photos below but really the photos don't do it justice! I've included a few photos from our trip to Philly and visits to King Tut and the Armarna exhibit at the UPenn museum. If anyone is thinking of seeing the King Tut exhibit (that is in Philly through September 30th) you won't be disappointed!

Thanks Sue! Did you come away with any new ideas for your own garden? So it wasn't that crowded, eh? One of these years I'll get there....maybe next year. Are you going to Boston show?

I know the King Tut exhibit is a big deal but every time I hear about it all I can think about is Steve Martin's King Tut skit from the old Saturday Night Live shows...lol.

Thanks Sue. The muslin trees were amazing and I loved the harp. I lived in Philly in the 70's and the show was as big and memorable 30 odd years ago as it seems to be today. At the Franklin Institute I remember taking a class on creating holograms...the laser, number and size of mirrors, size of the room, are all likely laughable today.

Patch, It's been years since I lived in Upper Darby and could drive the Sure Kill Expressway to the Philadelphia Flower Show. The smell was as memorable as the sight of all those flowers. To walk into that hall and smell the earth and all those daffodils and crabapples was magical. Thanks for the memories.

Chelsea Flower Show Photos (very large)

These are very nice photos, Robert! We also went to the Chelsea on Friday, or rather I went, because our little boy wasn't allowed to go, so my husband took him for a visit to my cousin in London while I roamed the grounds of the Chelsea. They had a lot of fun and so had I. The show was impressive, but it also looked like a great migration, there must have been tens of thousands of people on the ground and it was sometimes hard to get a foot on the floor, never mind taking a decent picture without either me being in someone's way or someone being in my way (or really both of the above at once). We went back to the Chelsea today (!) to buy some roses at their sell-off, and I got 4 from the Beales stand (DA doesn't sell). There were also fewer people, but the plant sell off, as much fun as it is, can also be a bit stressful, at least at the Beales stand which seemed beleaguered by everyone and their brothers and sisters. They were really one of the major attractions at the show. Their staff was really great, they always remained friendly and professional, and I got what I wanted. I thought that they were by far one of the most beautiful and impressive ones with its use of color and vertical space. I liked the Beales a lot better than DA's rather flat display where he showcased his beautiful but, as Robert already said, rather floppy Wedgwood Rose. I love DA's roses, but somehow, the exhibit lacked creativity, although it was also very popular and as a consequence much too crowded. However, DA only won silver-gilt for their exhibit, while Beales got the gold, fully deserved! http://www.classicroses.co.uk/articles/major_awards_won/gold_medal_at_rhs_chelsea_flower_show_09_for_peter_beales.html This is what I got from Beales: Purple Skyliner, a lovely violet repeat flowering rambler, so cute! Rural England, a light pink continous flowering multiflora rambler, looked so pretty together with their Purple Skyliner on their gates Sir Paul Smith, a nice smelling climber, cerise pink with silvery reverse, it looked outstanding on their pillars. And then the biggest coup of sorts. I managed to get one of the very few new introductions Beales actually sold after telling everyone first that they wouldn't sell (but then they did for a horrendously high price, you really don't want to know). it was their showcase rose, a bicolor deep purple-red climber, Highgrove. Highgrove is such a beautiful rose, I couldn't resist. The plant they gave me looks terrific, big, healthy, and with a quite a few flowers and buds on it. I enjoyed the trip to Canada Blooms this year. I found the garden display much more to my taste. Basically that is I like things being more organic, less too modern. I got a few ideas from the trip. The market place was okay. I like to get my seeds from Florabunda and a few thompson seeds from Gardenscape. I missed Patrick Studio though. There was a time when the Market place was far more fuller. I would have rather wanted to see more vendors to see what's new in gardening. Or maybe, it's because I brought a young child with me and had to spend less time looking at the products. Whatever.. there were definitely less vendors around this year and I am speculating the rental costs has risen. Perhaps it's time the organizers begin to address this issue and start looking at another venue. Another thing that always irks me, why should I pay for that magazine that lists down the name of the vendors and the displays. Goodness. Shouldn't this come free? Last, I was wondering why can't the organizers hold an open air garden show right there in early summer - alla Chelsea. This can be done at Downsview - the site where the Pope visited. It's being developed into a park and so why not? --

I'm heading to the Philly show and wrapping a visit to my little brother's family into one visit. I was the designer for the Rhode Island Nursery and Landscape Association's (RINLA) RI Flower Show exhibit both this year and last year. I find this chatter about the flower shows insightful and educational. I had taken the feedback I had read on here last year to heart for the design of this year's plan. I made sure that this year's design was something that the flower show visitors could feasibly do in their yard. My design was the little old garden shed with the artwork, pond with walk through bridge, and spring time theme. I knew there was some frustration that the previous year's exhibits were overblown and way beyond the reality of most of the visitors there. I almost would like to ask all of you visitors what would you like to see at the flower shows. I will pose the answers to the RINLA Flower Show exhibit committee when we meet next for next year's show (which is coming up soon.) Terry, you had commented on how the plant material was ordinary and run of the mill. Sue is completely right that we are limited by what is available in February. We get a lot of our flower material from Bay State and Lake Street Garden Center in NH. The woody plant material is donated to us by RINLA members and what can be forced to bloom and/or look decent for the show. Roses, hydrangeas, other summer material, and tropicals would be so cost prohibitive it wouldn't be worth it to bring them in. I had recommended some material my first year that wasn't run of the mill and was shot down by the committee because it would have cost a king's ransom to get it there. Oh well, live and learn.

You guys are too funny! Now I can't get that image or song out of my head -- thanks :-)

So Sue I am not sure if I am going to Boston show or not. My husband has been such a dear to go to the RI show and then the Philly show last weekend besides I am without my car until Monday so it would be more difficult to go alone, sigh... So definitely the crowds were better on Thursday this year. Also the last hour of the show we could walk around and see the exhibits that were crowded earlier in the show. Unfortunately very little time to look at the vendors. If I were going again I would split the day up going first thing when it opens doing half the show, getting my hand stamped then leaving for the day and then coming back later in the day. I think this would be the way so your eyes don't glaze over after looking at so much plant material and landscapes all at once. Plus the Reading Terminal Market is awesome to go for lunch right next door. So there are things to do to break up the day.

The two things I am going to try is to use Abutilons, flowering maples in containers saw a lot of these and see about getting a Lollip plant which I saw at both RI and Philly. Kind of neat...
