OK - so where did I put my Felco pruners?

I used them this morning to trim the bachelor buttons. Then I went to pull more of the obnoxious sedum that is taking over my garden. THEN I decided it was time to transplant a peony that is in deep shade, although it did have a couple of very small blossoms on it. When I went to get my pruners to cut the blossoms I could no find them. I have torn the house apart, looked in the fridge and freezer, looked in the trash and garbage, looked under all the plants in the garden, gone through the trash bag that is holding the sedum while it decomposes. I've looked everywhere - no pruners.

Had I put them down outside there would have been only two places where I would have done so - on the stone wall surrounding the garden or on the back deck steps. (One thought I had was that the dog took them, but they aren't in any of the places he normally drops stuff.)

I've made 3 complete searches of the yard. One search took so long that the dog's separation anxiety set in while he was inside and he took everything off the kitchen counters and was just beginning to get into the Fosamax when I came back in the house.

So - has this ever happened to you and where did you finally find what you were looking for?

I've had trowels and pruners turn up many months later.

Might they be buried with one of your transplants? I've found a few things that way.
Yes this has happened to me. Eventually I break down and buy another pair. One year, after mowing the lawn my husband approached me with about 4 pairs of pruners he found. I couldn't find them for the life of me. Still I think I am back down to two pairs now.
One way I find my things:
Go ahead and lose something else. When you are looking for that, you won't find it but you will find your pruners.

OMG ... new blades..???? crimminey.. do you have the tool that came with it.. to take it apart... take it all apart.. buff it out with '4 ought' 0000 steel wool .. oil it all down.. while you are there, all taken apart .. sharpen those blades on a honing stone ... and the put it all back together ... heck.. if you are going to throw them out.. i will pay postage.. and take them off your hands ,... re-coat with a film of oil.. every 2000 miles ... lol .. one trick on the sharpening... i believe it is a 17 degree angle ... use a sharpie.. and color in the edge ... and then on the honing stone.. try to angle it.. so you are removing the sharpie color all on one stroke ... if you cant get a small honing stone.. about the size of a pack of gum.. for about a buck or two.. you arent trying very hard .. new blades.. pshaw ... you will only need new blades.. after you have sharpened them a couple hundred times ... ken ps: i found that sharpening them while they are apart is much easier and safer ... Interesting. I give the opposite feedback to newbies, that it is OK to leave more than "recommended" until you understand the growth habits of the plant, the amount of vigor it has in your garden and eventually one becomes "comfortable" with taking off more and more in subsequent pruning cycles. People like to read books without knowing that the books are very general (and usually are referring to how to prune hybrid teas) and then they panic when they go to take their roses down to "18 to 24 inches" and their roses aren't that tall to begin with. Or, their beautiful plant grew to 7' tall last year, and they panic that they will do too much damage by taking it down to 1/2 - 3/4 of that size (or less). So, don't panic. You can always take more off later. And some roses resent hard pruning (at least some of mine do).

Right, these are supposed to be C. viticella and there definitely are no seeds attached. How very disappointing! I was under the impression the seed should look like "sperm" too, but it appeared as if the tails were cut off with a just a tuft left behind with a small bump (less than 1/16" in size) on the end. I picked a few back up into my fingers just after posting and when I went to press this between my fingers it was completely soft and had a lot of give. I'm usually good at noting my traders in my database, but seems I forgot to note this one...figures. Won't be to difficult to figure it out. Hi, Judy. Yes, I would suggest that you do it earlier in the Fall. The invisible flower buds develop in July-August. Afterwards and until they open in the Spring, that is when early frosts, late frosts, winter weather and lack of moisture/water can kill them. A good time to put winter protection is when the plant goes dormant or before your average date of first frost minus 1 or 2 weeks. Make sure that the protection "protects" the ends of the stems since this is where the buds develop. If you put chicken wire around the buds, make sure the chicken wire extends past the stems. The more separation, the more winter protection they get. That also applies to the vertical side. The chicken wire should be higher than the stems that are growing upwards. Again, the more separation between the vertical stems and the chicken wire and the cardboard, the better. Last suggestion, make sure that you pack the leaves down or use organic mulch. Press the leaves down to get rid of air pockets and put more in mid winter if you notice that settling has occurred; this usually weakens the winter protection. In the rare cases that I put the chicken wire winter protection, I place the wire -only- in October. The plants go dormant in Nov-Dec for me so the chicken wire is there and "ready to go" when the plants go to sleep or if hear there is going to be a crash in temperatures big time.

Garden Tools catalog - you might as well order another pair, if only to stop wasting valuable garden time searching for them. Within a week after the new pruners
arrive, the original "lost" pair will turn up - and then
you'll have a permanent spare for the NEXT time you lose
them. Trust me: I've been gardening for too many years and
these baffling "events" just seem to be part of the scheme
of things. Example: a couple of summers back, I came in for
a glass of cold water and laid my Felco pruners on the
kitchen counter while doing so. . .but they did NOT return
to the garden with me! Later still, when I came in for lunch, I first put away the dishes in the drainer and some
odds and ends on the counter - including my pruners. They
lay there in that utensil drawer until mid-winter, with
me using that drawer dozens of times a week - but I never
saw them 'cause I wasn't expecting them there. . .

Now your DOG sounds like the answer: if you could just tie a bone to the pruners, he could always find them for you.

LOL, Carl! I figured that the quickest way to find them was to hurry out to buy a new pair!

I spent two weeks looking for my missing pruning shears, no luck! So I went to HD and bought a new pair. After using the new ones for about thirty minutes, I set them down to take a break, finished the break---and picked up the old ones---right next to the new ones!
