hi, recently i found a place near killingwoth circle that has free horse manure. you do have to back in and shovel it up. if that is a possibility for you, i'll contact them and see if i can give you their phone #. i found them on craig's list. check it out!
supposedly cow manure has more nutrients than horse, but i've never come across it.

Cow manure is better, because it contains less seeds which will sprout into weeds, probably because cattle have a more thorough digestion system, what with the rumen and all. However horse manure too can grow some amazing flowers and vegies, it just results in more weeding.

Most dairy and beef farms compost all their manure, and spread it on their pasture land, where it is seen as a resource rather than a waste product and hence not so readily available to gardeners.

Thanks for offer of help. The only cow manure I've ever had was from my own many years ago. I prefer working with horse manure as it's not so sloppy and stinky. LOL

Try freecycle or craigslist. Last season I answered an ad on craigslist for free manure from a horse farm in Seymour. I never did make it there to pick up the manure, but there are local places that might have it if you look. If you don't see an ad offering, place an ad looking for it!

I'm in NH and follow craigslist, too to find manure. Last year we got a great deal on composted horse manure that contained straw and shavings. Check under both free and garden/farm categories. Many ads let you take it for free. Some will load a truck or trailer for a small fee. The other place I check is the weekly farmers bulletin published by our Dept of Agriculture. CT probably has one, too, and might put ads on line.
It's true that most dairy farmers spread manure on their hay or corn fields but there are also owners with a few animals that just wanted it hauled away. Good luck. Our garden was fantastic last year.
