my problem is i can't grow grass on the septic tank. i believe it is not deep enough. i don't want to dig it up and and lower it due to the expense. i have planted seed in the spring, fall and finally resulted to laying sod on top, but to no avail. can anyone recommend a type of grass that will grow or have any solution to my problem the area is no more than 8X5 square

How deep is it to the top of the tank? In most cases, you can add topsoil over the tank but not over the drainfield (leachbed.) Call your local health department or the company that installed the tank and find out what the regulations are. All grass needs a decent root zone to maintain itself during the dry times of year. And sprinkler systems are not recommended over the septic areas.

Another option to consider is to make something there besides lawn. A paved patio is acceptable as long as the pavers can be removed for access to the tank.

Oh no, Paul James the Gardener Guy's manual method, maybe I will buy a goat. Better yet, I will pay the neighborhood kids $10 a bushel for all the grass they can pull from the clumps. Will need to try watering before pulling. Anything has to be better. (Propane torch?, Nah.)

Variegated Reed grass vs. Ribbon Grass

I am guessing that the Variegated Reed grass you are referring to is Calamagrostis 'Overdam' or 'Avalanche'. The Phalaris (ribbon grass) spreads underground. Pull up some of the outside leaves and see how they connect to the parent. If you can't pull them up because they are too close, then its probably the nicely behaved Calamagrostis. If you can tell its a traveller, then you have the very poorly behaved ribbon grass. Also, I think that ribbon grass is more white than green and the Calamagrostis 'Overdam' is more green than white. Phalaris started blooming awhile ago and the tips of the leaves are often pink. The blooms of Calamagrostis are just starting to push their way up out of the foliage. Go to Google Images for a easy way to find pictures of both.

I had Bermuda patches all over my Blue Grass yard. I tried several different chemicals, some from box stores and some commercial grade. They did nothing but "control" it. None of them of them killed it except for Roundup but then it kills everything else AND the Bermuda still came back in most of the areas. I had always heard that you will end up digging it up so after about 5 years of a lot of time and money trying to get rid of it I finally set aside a weekend and dug it all out. You don't have to go very deep, just a couple inches. The next weekend I picked up 300 sq ft of Blue Grass sod ($120.00) and patched everything up. It's been a couple years since then and everything looks great.

You last 2 pictures are of KBG. I can't really tell what's going on in your initial post, the grass is shriveled up so I can't see the blades clearly.
