Lawn Grass - There's grass in my grass

Every year it is the same thing, pull the lawn grass out of my miscanthus clumps where it has seeded within the clump or spread into it. I have problems with normal lawn grass, invasive Zoysia lawn grass, and crab grass. One year on the advice of a local nursery man, I sprayed the invading lawn grass with a weak solution of Round Up herbicide before the ornamental grass came out of dormancy. Yes this worked, but my ornamental grass seemed stunted that year. Has anyone found a better method?

I use Paul James' famous manual method. I soak the surface with water, and pull out everything that doesn't belong. This includes little clumps of invading grass from big clumps of OG, and Wood Sorrel from everything.

Oh no, Paul James the Gardener Guy's manual method, maybe I will buy a goat. Better yet, I will pay the neighborhood kids $10 a bushel for all the grass they can pull from the clumps. Will need to try watering before pulling. Anything has to be better. (Propane torch?, Nah.)

I'm dreadful at lawn ID, so I won't even try. But given your location, it's probably a standard tri-mix (fescue, rye, Kentucky bluegrass). Can you give us the wide shot of your lawn so we have an idea of what you're working with? Sometimes it indicates specific problems. Sometimes it doesn't. For starters, water 1" at a time and around once a week (warmer weather will require it somewhat more often, cooler weather won't require water at all). Mow as high as you can stand--three inches is good--and mow the lawn before you're cutting off 1/3 of the total blade. So if you mow at 3", mow again at 4.5" or shorter. Feed around Memorial Day, Labor Day, October 1, and when the lawn stops growing but is still green. That's the synthetic feeding schedule; organics differ a little bit, mostly moving earlier. That'll be an optimal feeding rate for a northern lawn.

If you already have enough grass in your yard for your needs ( especially if its just for looks) , its better to not struggle with growing grass around trees.
