If you want the best results, DO NOT USE PLASTIC! Use some sort of paper. I like newspaper, folded into envelopes and the seams sealed with "scotch" tape. You may want to use a double thickness of newspaper. The newspaper absorbs and dissipates any residual moisture your seeds may retain. Plastic will hold that moisture and mildew may set up. You can use an open plastic box or pickle jar for storage but don't put on the top. Also, put paper towels in the bottom to absorb and dissipate moisture. For shipping, leave them in the newspaper envelope and then make fold them in cardboard for protection. Mail them in a padded envelope.

Patty, yes the trees get all the measly chill hours South Florida has, since the trees are outside. My adult tree already shed all its leaves in September, and lost most of the new ones in hurricane Wilma last month.But they are coming back again. The Atemoya and Sugar Apple trees are still leafy. I have to hand pull the leaves from my Sugar Apple trees in Dec/January since they don't drop them all themselves. Same with regular Apple trees- it just doesn't get cold enough for long enough to make them shed cleanly. I don't know why the Cherimoya shed so early. Possibly the dry conditions caused it. BFreeman- the question was answered.. What makes your method the best? It takes a lot longer than the way I do it-what is the benefit? Are the seedlings healthier if they take longer to germinate? Maureen, if your Tara is alive, and you have any to spare for another trade, would you check my trade list? I have lots of hummingbird plants, and also white butterfly ginger. My ginger is making little red growth knobs, but some of the large tubers were dry, unfirm, and had shrivelled roots. I'm curious if Tara bloomed for you this far north, even if you can't trade. my seeds came packed in peat moss, slighty damp. You might ask them if they can put a warmer in there... a little packet that you shake or something and it heats up and stays warm for a long time.
