You want to transplant a non-native tree from another continent onto property in New Orleans? Is that correct? If so, why do you ask this question on the Native Plants forum? I thought this forum involves keeping spaces native and not introducing alien species... maybe I misunderstand the posting or maybe I misunderstand the intent of this forum... I dunno???

Another guess is Lombardy poplar (Populus nigra 'Italica'). I know they are commonly planted in Hungary.

I think it's the mediterranean cypress as well. You might get a similar effect if you plant a tall narrow juniper that will grow in your area. The blue one is probably not appropriate for the rest of your landscape...but I expect there are some green ones that would work well for you...
I noticed in the Wayside Gardens online catalogue they have some shrubs similar to what you are looking for. (I have ridden on the train from Rome's airport to get out to the ruins and also love those tall skinny trees!)

I think you are referring to Italian Cypress. We just planted two of them here in zone 8b, and are hoping they will thrive. So far, they are doing well in a raised bed on the south side of our house. They are very popular in California, but I am not sure they will make it down here this far south. Good luck.

Wow- nasty words on this thread. I can see exactly how this fits in though, i;m sure that there is a relative of the cypress in queston that is native to louisiana. I also agree with ncgardener- there's no need to be nasty to first-time posters.

Someone please explain to me how Knottyceltic was being nasty? S/he asked some questions and explained the focus of this forum..which is native plants. Says so right up top.

Praglen had just joined Gardenweb the day the post went up. A view of the forum topics shows Native Plants ( no mention of North America). With this in mind, do you believe it is so far fetched for a person to post about a plant native to Europe? Only by reading the fine print below the forum topic on this page would one notice " North America ".
This was a mistake in the original set up of this forum on Gardenweb. I recall mentioning it to Spike.

Maybe I'll be sorry to be adding to this thread, but i also think that it's the wrong place to be asking about planting a Non Native tree. It doesn't matter where the tree is native or when the person joined the forum - she is still asking about planting a non native plant in a country other than its place of origin. I didn't think that reply was nasty at all, it was right on target. Suggesting another type of similar tree that IS native was even better. This is just my HO.

As many trees and other garden plants that North America has sent to other areas who is to say that what she was asking about is non native of North America until she asked. Botanical Gardens and collectors have spread many plants way beyond their original location.
