Name That Plant!

Mystery tree?... or weed?

Hi there,
I've had this tree pop up amongst my bottlebrush. I'm not sure if it came in with it or by other means.
After much debate I have moved it, but would love to know if its worth trying to keep or if its just a weed.
It's about 6ft tall at the moment (it's been there a while now), fairly scraggly and the leaves are long and pointed with serrated edges.
At first we thought it may be a peppercorn but the leaves aren't right.
Any ideas? Feel free to ask if you need more info or better pictures.

Some Salix are considered weeds in Melbourne...I would get rid of it now while it's easy to do so. Many Salix sp are considered Weeds of National Significance in Australia. We are having trouble with them spreading along creek and river banks, spoiling native environment.

Apart from that fact, Salix will get into any nook and cranny to find water and with our dryish climate they are bound to find sewers, water pipes, pools etc. which can become a costly and messy problem.

I certainly agree that free plants aren't always good. I said straight up that most people consider this a weed. But newbies should also be encouraged to look deeper into what was identified ... to judge for themselves if it is something they want, not just to take one person's word for it that the plant is worthless. Perhaps, ken, a few more qualifying statements like "in my opinion" would help soften your statements to be the opinions they are. Latin names are for identification, agreed that the name itself doesn't make it good. But just because something is not what you want in your garden doesn't mean that other people don't want it. Look at all the common names that end in "weed": milkweed, joe pye weed, sneezeweed, ragweed ... but only that last one would be yanked out of my garden. Fothergilla gardenii would be a nice plant there, I agree. A lovely spring bloomer with handsome summer leaves and good fall color. And native too.

get undiluted round up ... or generic .... put it in the very expensive container at the link .. snip off each sprout.. and apply ONE SINGE DROP TO EACH... return product to original labeled container ... it is a labeled use.. and it is EXTREMELY MINIMAL USE ... it is not a spray thing .... repeat for as many years as needed ... i had a friend who had a mountain ash that did this... and all he did was mow.. and you could not walk across the lawn barefoot for all the little sticks that would hurt your feet ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: link

My husband and I cut down a tree in our front yard after Hurricane Sandy almost a year and a half ago. Since then, these tree weeds or whatever we are having been popping up and they are overtaking our yard. Does anyone know what these are? How do we get rid of them?

Thanks a lot. I'll get rid of it. Glad I found out before those roots embedded themselves into my garden. :)
