Need some organic compost for veggie beds in Eastern MA

Hi,

I was buying from a company in Jamaica Plain last year..Greenleaf, but they lost their lease and I would love to find a new supplier. I have new raised veggie beds to fill as soon as possible this spring. Any ideas where to get it?

I produce way more compost than I need (we have farm animals) but am in Spencer which is not close to Boston. If you are willing to pick up, you are welcome to take it away...

Sounds like there is a niche in the market for anybody who keeps horses in the Boston area :-)

You can get as picky as you want to be. I'd avoid grass clippings from a yard that used weed and feed/ chem lawn pesticide sprays, etc. The chicken manure may have antibiotics, etc. but I really don't feel qualified to give advice on that as I have no idea of half live of these ingredients. I never add lime unless the soil PH demands it. Try and go natural, and remember that composting does tend to neutralise ingrediants; but if you know something has been poisioned; don't use it. You'll learn as you go; the important thing is to make compost now and refine your techiniques/ recipes as you go. If an ingredient feel "bad" to you skip it for now. I just looked over your list and you might want to get more information on just what that top soil really is. The name sounds so nice, but ask where it comes from as it could be a waste of $...Just my humble 2 cents. Coffee grounds are great in my book; same for all veggie scraps, leaves, straw. Glad to hear you want to go organic; hopefully we can heal the earth one convert at a time. Good luck and let us know how things go. Each of us learn daily. Happy gardening!

I'm out of town Sept 23-28 and Oct 5- Nov 1, so if it's on Sept 23 or Oct 14 I'll have to miss it. I don't have much ready to swap anyway, so I will just plan to see you all next spring, or I might be able to foist off a few plants on someone who's going to be at Katy's Marthas Vineyard Extravaganza in early September. Right now the only thing I've got growing that I'd bring that's at all unusual is rosemary-leaf willow (Salix elaeagnus, aka S. rosmarifolia). There are some variegated hydrangeas coming along, but they're a bit iffy anyway; hard to overwinter that first year after rooting. Other than that it's just some very common stuff, like thyme, rudbeckia, angelica, peach-leaf bellflower, columbine ... nothing anyone could get too excited about! I think you should go ahead and pick one of the dates listed above, and if anyone wants anything that's on my list we'll see if we can get a volunteer to bring it. Cheers - DtD

Here is my take on cocoa mulch. I like the way it smells, but was surprised that my mother(and perhaps other people) didn't like the smell. It is hazardous to dogs who can die if they eat it. The chocolate smell attracts them. My vet had warnings and it sounds as if local pets have died. Every year that I used it, it got moldy. Buckwheat hulls give the same look, but don't seem to get moldy. However, both the cocoa mulch and the buckwheat hull mulch are expensive. I put the buckwheat in my special containers and put a bark mulch, chopped up leaves or straw in my extensive beds.

Easy Plum Torte by Autumn Hills Orchard in Groton MA 1/2 c uns butter 3/4 c sugar 1 c unbleached flour, sftd 1 tsp baking powder pinch salt 2 eggs 10-12 pitted purple plums, halved sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon for topping Preheat oven to 350. Cream butter and sugar in bowl. Add flour, bkg pwdr, salt and eggs and beat well. Spoon batter into 8 or 9" spring form pan. Place plum halves, skin side up, on top of batter in circular pattern. Sprinkle with lemon jce, cinn, sugar to taste. Bake approx 50 min, til center springs back and edges are lightly browned. EAT and enjoy!

ellen_s, i visit a good friend in north brookfield on occasion ... and i have a truck ... and many 5-gallon buckets ... if you're serious about the hauling away ... that would be like christmas! :0)

We do compost manure but we also use the composted manure to add to a large compost pile with kitchen scraps, shredded paper, garden clippings, etc. That's the good stuff :-)

I had several people contact me to ask about coming to collect it so I don't think we'll have any more left over this year.

Ellen, I have friends in Spencer and bring my compost - from my farm animals - to them from Salem. lol

Prairiemoon, if you are near a community where there are stables, you may be able to get all the free manure compost your veggies could hope for. Usually, it's a nice mix of horse poop and stall bedding (shavings, straw). If its well composted, you don't have to worry about weed seeds, and can apply it right to the beds.
