I'm interested! I love the idea of a swap on the south shore because it's convenient to both the boston members and to ... me.

My work schedule has me out of town (WAY out of town) something like Sept 20-27 and Oct 5 through the end of the month, so I'll vote for early-mid Sept. Of course it can't conflict with Katy'd Vineyard visit, the weekend of Sept 8.

I am also very interested in doing a fall swap. My preferences would be for mid-September or mid-October. The dates I will be unavailable are: Sept. 25 to Oct. 5. I'm going away to Las Vegas for my 25th wedding anniversary!

I have some things I want to swap, and not necessarily get anything in return, although I'm really interested in woodland ephemerals like trout lily, jack in the pulput, trilliums, etc. or anything with a variegated, purple or lime-colored or otherwise interesting foliage.

I have a peony called Shaggy Dog, some Strawberry Candy daylilies, some Prima Purple daylilies, some Prima Cranberry Red daylilies and some burgundy-leaf ajuga. Also a few other things for anyone who doesn't mind getting things I don't actually know the name of.

Once people have settled on a date, I will actually start potting some of these things up, except maybe the peony. I think that might prefer being dug the morning of the swap and fooled around with as little as possible.

I hosted a swap early last year (I may have gotten the ball rolling. I hope you h ave as good a time as I did, as the host. I would suggest late September or Early October. Plenty of time for growth before really cold winter sets in, and weather is cool enough for transplanting iwhtout worrying excessively about watering and heatwaves.

i thoroughly enjoyed idabean's swap last fall, have no preference as to date, and since i live in quinkee, too, this sounds like a most excellent idea.

Ida Beans swap was a great time last year and I love having plants that I came from friends or family. The end of September or beginning of October would be better for me. Thanks dtd for reminding folks about the Polly Hill Weekend your such a good den mother. kt

Anyone else have a preference for dates? I've given away most of the plants I'd started, and will need to get busy if we're having a swap when I'm around.

I can't believe how many rosemary-leaf willows and verbena bonariensis found new homes this summer - anyone who admired them in the garden was offered one as a party favor. That little trick works really well if you've started too many of something.

Don't be discouraged if people are not replying right now. Many are away on vacations, and others only check GW infrequently in the summer because they are too busy gardening/ Keep the post in front of us, and people will begin to respond. I think you should just make a decision on a date in late September very early october and go with it. When an event is firm, we won't dither too much.

Pablo, I am very interested in trading a couple of my peonies for your woodland plants -- the bloodroot, the canada lily, and the butterfly milkweed, as well as any others you might like to bring along.

BTW, pablo, I don't know if you need any horse manure for your compost pile, but there is a horseback riding academy near Michelle, where they give the mountain of horse poop away for free. I plan to visit there the day of the swap.

I'm out of town Sept 23-28 and Oct 5- Nov 1, so if it's on Sept 23 or Oct 14 I'll have to miss it. I don't have much ready to swap anyway, so I will just plan to see you all next spring, or I might be able to foist off a few plants on someone who's going to be at Katy's Marthas Vineyard Extravaganza in early September.

Right now the only thing I've got growing that I'd bring that's at all unusual is rosemary-leaf willow (Salix elaeagnus, aka S. rosmarifolia). There are some variegated hydrangeas coming along, but they're a bit iffy anyway; hard to overwinter that first year after rooting. Other than that it's just some very common stuff, like thyme, rudbeckia, angelica, peach-leaf bellflower, columbine ... nothing anyone could get too excited about!

I think you should go ahead and pick one of the dates listed above, and if anyone wants anything that's on my list we'll see if we can get a volunteer to bring it.

I could do september 23rd or october 14th. I would probably have more to offer in October because I would have time to move a few things around.
I glutted at a local swap last spring. All those tiny little plants looked like they would fit just fine in my little bed! I got a false sunflower which is wonderful but way too big for my space. It clearly doesnt work and wont work anywhere in my garden but I am sad about letting it go. I guess that is why we have plant swaps...

I'd like to come, depending on the date, but don't choose the date according to my preferences since (as you will see from another message) I have nothing to offer yet. If I come, in order to keep up the "swap" aspect, I'll bring some bulbs.
