I am pretty new with the gardening and I have a Fuyu and an Izu planted this spring. The Fuyu started to leaf out about a month ago but all of its few leaves dried out completely after a few days. The Izu has been a bare stick with not even a single bud getting any bigger. I guess the threshold for the number of heat units passed a long time ago here in NC, where we have had 90+ degrees pretty much every day for the last couple of months. Both trees still have green tissue under the bark, and *both* have just started to leaf out *from the rootstock*. I read that all of those leaves should be removed. Is there any other recommendation anyone can give? What could happen with the Fuyu that it has lost all the new leaves and is there still any hope in it? My other new trees seem to feel happy with the same watering schedule etc.

The OP already stated there were other cherries in leaf in the area. And showing green under the bark is not always a sign the tree is still viable - a tree may be technically dead (no new growth, no root activity) and still show green. It takes time for all the wood to dry, become brittle and show gray or brown coloring under the bark. Reading posts from other OK residents would indicate that plants are performing on schedule for that zone (7-8), so flowering and leaf out of the cherry should have already occurred. I would agree the tree is probably dead.

All I would do at this time is wait and see if there is any growth at all, even growth from ground level. Figs are pretty tough. If by mid-June there is no sign of life, gently dig away the soil from the figs' crowns. Look for any evidence of growth....if none is seen, dig up the figs, and check them further. At this point they will show complete death, or some growth. I hope you see some growth! Moses

My garage has windows on all sides. It gets real bright inside during the day. I did that for my conifers all winter last year and all did just fine. And besides, someone from this forum last year (forgot who) told me to keep it in a garage and provide it minimal light so I took his/her suggestion. I'm not really concerned about that though, just mentioned it because they are winterized in the same location as my perennials. Its also nice when you have a garage to store these things because deer and rabbit destroy everything in my yard. Some warm days I keep my garage open and place a temporary fence in front of it. Maybe I worded it wrong. When I mean sprinkle I mean not soaking it with a hose but rather watering it efficiently from a small watering can which drains down all the way to the bottom. These are 4 inch square pots. The thyme grower whom I bought the plants from told me these thymes should stay completely dry during the winter, not even one watering he says. So for plants like these they need overhangs. They may do fine in nature but by potting them they are already losing that status. Potted plants require more care than in ground and even in ground ones need more care than wild ones. Plants in nature adapt to the specific location from a young age. I see maples, oaks, self seeded callery pears, tsuga canadensis at my workplace all growing as tall trees in a wooded swamp constantly in a body of water. While these trees are not naturally aquatic they've adapted to it because they were born in there. I think of it as that. Oh how wonderful. I've never been to NYBG or central park but guess I won't ever go there, thanks for the pre warning. Wildhaven, my irises in my garden did that too but these are potted plants I'm talking about. I let all my inground plants let be.
