Four new hostas....looking for opinions and/or photos of yours

Hey all....finally got to do a little bit of hosta shopping (not nearly enough). Today we bought Invincible, Devon Green, Kathryn Lewis and Whirlwind (gonna be one of my faves I think).

Just looking for any opinions on how quickly or slowly they might grow, how hardy they have been for you...and any pictures you have of yours so I know what to look forward to.

My Guardian Angel has been a pretty slow grower up until this year. She really "leaped" as they say. This is from early this spring, and she has really gotten a lot fuller since then. I just bought a great Devon Green from Hallson's a couple of weeks ago. No photo yet, but it's a great plant. I hope it grows quickly.

It is definitely difficult for nurseries and farms to stay in business. Given the high cost of fuel lately and the fact that their land is often worth 'muli millions' of dollars it is hard to blame a farmer eeking out a living selling out to a developer. I try to do 95% of my plant buying and shopping at local nurseries and only 5% at box stores. Often I don't buy anything at the box stores in a season because the selection of plants (not just the quality) isn't what I am looking for. I can agree that they are a good source for beginning gardeners just getting started with their common plant varieties offered (tried and true) but at what cost to local nurseries? Idabean I too like New England Nurseries in Bedford, Mass. They definitely carry different types of uncommon annuals, perennials, container plants etc. than you can find other places. I think their prices are fair and they have coupons in the local papers for deals. Anyone here just getting going in gardening don't be scared off thinking that local nurseries are much higher in prices and avoiding them. Definitely check them out you may be pleasantly surprised they are quite competitive with the box stores and offer plants you are unfamiliar with or only available through mail order.

With my plants, a lot of it, as far as pest damage goes, is just the good luck of being in a climate that snails and slugs don't seem to like. It's arid here where I live, so i just water, water, water and when I have the occasional pest issues, I try to use 'appropriate' insecticides, so as not to kill pollinators. I really make an effort to try and not do that. They help keep US alive, so it's the least I can do. : ) Sometimes I see caterpillar/cutworm damage...Believe it or not, the biggest problems for me, by far, are pill bugs! When the population explodes, like it is this season, they are everywhere. Snail and slug pellets seem to work real well to control them. Plus, yeah, sometimes those spouses are real pesty. For that, I just keep the lawn mowed, edged and fairly weeded. Keeps my wife happy. : ) I only fertilize with the nice dirty water I get from my fish pond, but rich soil and water are what's working for me to get mine to grow well, I guess. No doubt you'll get a lot of good information from having started this thread. Good luck, and HAVE FUN! Cheers, Don B.

Once thing in the Austin market would be to not be a home that has been for sale too long with the pricing. If you list at a really high price in February and then when summer rolls around you drop it buyers will still see the days on the market (DOM) from February and start wondering what is wrong with your house and why it hasn't sold since DOM is generally less than that in many areas. Every realtor I interviewed (except one - who I wouldn't recommend to any seller) said current DOM in Austin was 60-90 days, but that was for the whole area. It varies some in localized areas and they told me around 30 days in my area if you are priced right. I know it sucks to move twice but I as a buyer would not want to rent back for an extended time like that to the sellers. A few days sure, but any longer than that and I'd rather go find another house where I wouldn't have to to that, unless your house is unique I can't see many wanting to do that. Also most people with kids would want to be moved in when school starts. You might start looking at what your options are if you need to move twice and plan ahead. Since April to May is when it starts picking for the summer I would start looking at what the DOM are in your area and allow some leeway for that and then list around that time if you want to try to not move twice. You are likelier to be able to have a longer closing than renting back for months. However be careful with that as others mentioned buyers could pull out or their financial circumstances change. Now would be a good time though to start sprucing up and de-clutter the house so it is ready whenever you want to list.

We have 3 cats as well.....all introduced at various times. It was bizarre......the first time Smudge and Bud met (both boys) they acted like long-lost brothers. Took to each other instantly. Roxie came as a kitten and she is fiesty. They all get along, but she growls at them......they don't growl at her. She's not a morning person, she growls and swats at them every morning. After that she's fine. Keeping them in separate rooms is a great idea. Put a towel, blanket, etc in with the new cat. After a few days put something of your other cats in with him, and put the towel out with the other cats. They'll get used to each other's scent. Dogs are so much easier. Getting a new dog and taking him to the dog park with your dog and let them run around and play with each other. They'll become friends and then bring the new dog home!

Okay, I'm an idiot. You asked about Whirlwind, not Guardian Angel. Same story though. Slow growing for me, but finally showing a spurt this year. This photo is also from early this spring. I've seen only a couple of mature specimens in gardens, and they were fantastic.

One tip about Whirlwind - I have two one in a little morning sun and the other was in quite a bit of mid day sun. I read here on the forum how people were disapointed that their Whirlwind turned green over the summer. My original one in only a little sun never did. The one in more sun did turn green during the summer so I moved it to a pot in all shade.

Thanks for the photos and the tips! I do have my Whirlwind in a spot where it will be mostly shaded all day with some sun in the early evening.

Slp, we buy our hostas from some local people in Ramsey MN...we are so lucky to know them. Their yard is gorgeous ~ we enjoy strolling through it while we shop.

Here's my Whirlwind, only 2 years old, but it's been a fantastic plant and I really don't baby it as much as some of the others I have. It gets a couple of hours of afternoon sun, but it seems to keep it's color well and it's grown to a nice size in just the 2 years I've had it.

I love, love, love both Whirlwind and Invincible. The hostas in the pictures are from last week. They have been in the ground for 3 years.

Queenie...they are GORGEOUS!!! Thank you for sharing your pics! Hubby picked out Invincible....he's got pretty good taste considering he's not so much the gardener as he is the guy that helps the gardener. ;)
