Moving...... again

Hi All. Look at my Zone/State. Yes, it's true. Most of you don't know this, but my marraige was ending when I hosted the swap in Owatonna last year. I've since met someone very special and have gotten myself engaged and will be moving to Michigan, more specifically the UP, even more specifically the Keweenaw Peninsula. That's WAAAAAY up there! I'm keeping the house in Rochester indefinitely, so can still be a MN gardener, right? I'll be at the swap at Dave's place on the 7th so will hopefully see a lot of you there. And all of my MN GW friends have an open invitation to visit me 'up north'. The Keweenaw is a vacation destination, you know, and we have a guest room. Email me if you have questions or comments you don't want to post here, OR, if you'd like to see a link to the beautiful, century old home that we're buying.

Joyce - Congratulations that you have found your special guy. The first thing I noticed was your zone/state. The Keweenaw Peninsula is a nice area and youÂre correct, it's WAY up there.

I'm so glad you will be at Dave's for the spring plant swap. Is there anything specific your looking for in plants to take to your new home?

Please send a link of your home youÂre buying, so I can drool.

You wouldn't believe how stressful it has been. My family are a bunch of dumb Rednecks that don't care about my plants. To them, they are just weeds. My nephew's dog likes pulling marginals out of their pots, carry them to the front yard, chew on them a bit, and just leave them lying there to dry out. When we tell him about it, he just laughs. Anyhow, I have gotten to the point of wanting to change my last name. I might be over it by Christmas.

Three weeks ago we had a "Gust Front" blow through here with winds up to 55+ miles an hour. I lost two trees in the back which was only a big deal because of cleaning up the mess.Over a week later we discovered that a large Hickory in front of the house had about a 4 foot long crack starting where a large branch joined 10 feet above the ground and extending down into the heart of the tree. We had to have it taken down. In doing so we lost the shade that it provided for my hosta bed and they were exposed daily to 7 hours of afternoon son. They were fading before my eyes. I don't have a bed ready for them as it is just too hot and humid to do anything outside right now. So I managed to dig them up and potted all of them. About 25 plants. They are now sitting under our east facing, second story screened porch. They get dappled sunlight in the morning and are in shade for the rest of the day. Not a single one of them has complained. I was afraid that I would have trouble with some but even the Fire and Ice which had a small branch fall and crush one side of it is toddling right along. Right now the Guacomole is the only variety blooming but they hadn't even put up scapes when I dug them 2 weeks ago. I discovered when I dug up the bed that it was seething with a thick mass of fine tree roots so it seems it was only a matter of time before I would have started having problems anyway. I will probably put in a planting bed when it cools off a little in the fall. In the meantime I am considering keeping mine in pots. Southeast Tennessee isn't like the gulf coast or Texas but the summers have been pretty ugly the past few years.

Christine, thanks for the tip about The Old Stone house. I want to make a pilgrimage there soon, but my in-laws are going to visit soon. Maybe I'll take them along... Suja, thanks also for the info on Nick Weber's Rosarium. Maybe I can talk my in-laws into that too... :) Now here is the deal. In my new home in Baltimore, I have about 8 or 10 rose bushes, some huge that seem to have been around for a while. I have no idea if they are antique or not. They are blooming their heads off right now, and the garden is so beautiful with the roses, peonies, salvia/veronica and others blooming that I wish I could share it with all of you! Suja -- even my daughter's delphinium is blooming! Yay! So I don't think I'll plant any more roses. Yes. I can't believe I'm saying this. Except maybe Marie Pavie. I loved that little thornless bush -- it had such fantastic form! Now I'm not afraid of a little BS, like Lynn. I never sprayed in NC and don't plan to ever. If it thrives, great, if it's too fussy, out it goes. Lynne, ALL my NC roses were from Antique Rose Emporium. That's before I knew of some really cool local places like Niche Gardens, which carries some antique varieties. The ARE roses were very healthy and just took off. I must have had about 20 different varieties in my garden there. I just had a friend send me photos of my garden there. They are doing beautifully, although the new owners did shear them all into a hedge. I did not shear them because I love the form of the bush almost as much as the roses themselves. deepti

DH lived in Outremont and I lived even further down from Queen Mary, more near the Van Horne area. I am soooo glad that I had weeded through things these past couple of years. It really is making a differene in my life now. I'm finding that it's been pretty easy to pack. DH has even gone through some boxes of stuff that I didn't know what to do with and have been lugging around from place to place. All of his stuff is packed. So far, there are 43 boxes packed. One thing that's helped me is when I get to the last of a set of boxes pertaining to a particular item, I've been leaving the last one open and putting things in there as I find the odd piece that goes in there. Then I repack it properly. We will be going this weekend to find a new place. Then I'll be able to figure out if I'll have any storage room for some of these boxes.

Well, first of all, CONGRATULATIONS! How wonderful that you found someone that makes your heart sing!

We'll definitely miss seeing you at the various MN Gardening events, but I just know you will love being a "UP'er"!

Sorry I won't get to see you at Dave's but I wish you all the best in your new life adventure!

Thanks for all the good wishes, Sandy, Marie, and Linda! I will most definitely miss everyone in this group. I'm going to hang around the forum but I'll miss getting together for the swaps. It is so hard to guess at what I'll want for plants there. The yard is small, but has some sun and some shade and I'm planning to absolutely fill it up! I've dug up a lot of strawberries, iris (including some of your grandma's grape colored sweet smelling ones, Marie), and hostas from the yard in Owatonna and those are going with me. I might manage to dig a rosebush or two from the Owatonna yard too, but would love to have another or two if they happened to turn up at the swap. I'd like to have some of what I call 'wild phlox' that someone had at a swap a couple of years ago. It reminds me of what grew wild in the timber back home in Nebraska. There are probably 40 different plants I'll think of later, but my mind is going blank at the moment. I know I want to take MN GW'er plants with me when I go, not because I can't get plants there, but because I want plants that will make me think about all of you. It's an exciting new life ahead, but I'm going to bring the best of the old life with me :-)

Such nice country up there! And with all that snow, you should still be able to grow zone 5 perennials. To the more important development, congratulations on your engagement!

Thanks Dave and Rick! Dave, last I knew, the postal service ran both ways between MN and the UP. And hostas (and probably orchids) travel pretty well by mail! Rick, isn't that great that the weather up there is warm, even though there is a ton of snow? I guess I can thank the lake effect for both of those things! The woods up there are just gorgeous, as is the plant and animal life. I've already told Gary that I plan to be a tourist the first year or so :-)

Joyce, congratulations! But, how can you leave Minnesota nice? Well, you'll be happy and meet some good people up there too. Michigan is beautiful. We'll miss you though. Plan your trips back here for our future swaps.

I brought some phlox before. I'll bring more to Dave's swap. I have a "Improved Braze" rose bush for, oh, must be 20 years. It only bloomed once or twice. Maybe it needs more sun and better soil. Last year it even got black spots. If you want it, I'll dig it up. Do you want raspberries? I have plenty. Did you gave me the orchid, lovage and hardy green onion? Well, they did not do too well. My husband killed the orchid by watering too much while I was away. The lovage and green onions are doing pretty bad. The animals (rabbits? There are a few fat ones here) dug them up. If you have extras, please bring them to Dave's swap. Last year, the animals ate all of my apples and peaches too. Wish I know how to keep
them away. We have never gotten any fruits from them all these years. By the way, my blue flax, lambs ears, blanket flower, spiderwort, some roses, etc. have not come back yet. Should they be up by now? Wonder if they are dead. Hope to get some replacements at Dave's.
