Sudden death? of Japanese Maple

junebud

We have a Japanese Maple that gets a fair amount of sun but that has been flourishing in front of our home for the past 10 years. Prior to leaving for a two week vacation I noticed in late June that the leaves weren't opening as fully as in years past. The weather at that point was hot and dry, but we were watering. When we returned two weeks later all of the foliage, and many of the leaves, were completely dried out. I don't know if I should leave it, prune it, or how to tell wether it's dead -- there still appears to be some green in the stalks. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
