Death of our maple - replacement?

We recently lost our beloved Japanese maple to verticulum wilt last fall. We are now looking for a replacement that could replace this specimen tree. Our house is pumpkin-colored and the red foliage worked really well with this, so any alternative that worked well in terms of color would be appreciated.

The master gardener that diagnosed the problem said we could do another Japanese maple if we put it in a large pot, but we are not too keen on this idea. The pots the size that she was thinking of price out at $250 and we are concerned about how they would perform in the cold winters. So potentially there is a big expense, we are not sure the tree would survive the winter, and we are not sure we would like the new look. She also suggested a blue-green weeping evergreen for the spot, but this seemed problematic to us. Evergreen do not really speak to us as being specimen trees and there is the issue of it dominating the planting bed.

A friend recommended a Parrotia because of the autumn colors but they can get rather large and we weren't sure if this would work in this small, northern exposed space which doesn't get much sun.

The spot is near our front door and rather small, so the tree would have to be small as well. I have enclose a picture below so you can see the area. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
