Did Fertilizer kill my Maples?

2 years ago I bought 2 eight foot maples and planted them. They grew well. The following spring they came back even more healthy and vigorous. I bought some of those tree fertilizer-pound-in-the-ground things and followed the directions. Pounded them in about 30" away from trunk. 2 weeks later my trees began to turn yellow and then died. The stakes said they were formulated for maples...as well as other shrubs and trees. My lilacs loved them! Right away I dug the fertilizer stakes out of the ground but it was too late. This spring I notice some sprigs coming up from the root balls so the trees weren't completely killed afterall...but believe me when I say they looked completely dead! Did the fertilizer stakes do this or was it just a coincidence, do you think?

No. Roots are most active in the fall, in woody plants.

The reason: in the fall, the air is cool, but the ground is still very warm from the summer heat. Root growth continues even after there has been a killing frost.

In the spring, the exact opposite is true: the air is warm, but the ground is still very cold/cool from the winter cold and so the roots don't do a lot of growing in the spring.

Fertilizer will not stimulate root growth; generally, fertilizer will stimulate the growth of more foliage, especially if there is a lot of nitrogen in the fertilizer.

No one ever fertilizes the trees in a forest and they do just fine. We, as humans, want to control everything and that is not in the best interest of the tree. Trying to force the tree to do something (grow) that it's not prepared to do is detrimental to the tree.

The only other question would be the amount of spikes used. I would think a tree of that size in the ground for two years would take a bunch of fertilizer to kill it. How much rain/watering occurred after you put in the spikes?

DO NOT FERTILIZE ANY PLANT UNLESS A SOIL TEST INDICATES THAT FERTILIZATION IS NEEDED! There is usually more than enough fertility in most soils for any tree or shrub that you plant.

And if you do find out that fertilization is needed, DO NOT USE FERTILIZER SPIKES! Fertilizer spikes are too much fertilizer in too small of an area. Just because you can buy fertilizer spikes, doesn't mean that you should use fertilizer spikes.

Instead, use a granular fertilizer, in the formulation indicated/required by the soil test, and spread it evenly under the tree.

Most newly planted trees and shrubs are establishing their root system for the first few years and may not grow much. That's normal. The plants have been fed a rich diet while potted at the nursery and the root system is usually fairly small for the amount of top growth the plant has. After planting, the tree needs to develop its root system to be able to support the top-growth of the plant. Trying to force the tree to produce more top-growth than the root system can handle, is just asking for trouble.

For an established tree, you would want to spread the fertilizer evenly under the tree and extending slightly beyond the tree's drip line. Again, there is probably no need to fertilize an established tree unless there is visually something wrong with the tree.

Hi, I think that whatever happens to this tree (and I hope it's alright), you need to relax just a bit, or you might stress out the next trees with too much caring - believe me, I've done it. First, are you sure the webs you saw were in fact from red spider mites, or possibly only some little garden spider that wouldn't necessarily have been a problem? Secondly, you ran and applied two different and rather serious chemicals to the tree, when in fact if you did have mites, a good hosing down with water, and possibly a couple of drops of detergent in the water, would have sufficed. It's hard to say now whether the chemicals did in your tree or not, whether it was the hosing you gave it (on top of your twice wkly watering, which it might not have needed, or the compost soil mix which probably was too 'soggy' for maples, who don't like wet feet. Next time take one step at a time, be sure you're addressing the actual problem with the right remedy, and do a bit of reading on soil mixes for diff. trees. Boy, is it ever easy to give advice when it's not my tree in trouble :-). Sorry.

Yep: You nailed it. What does the label say, is it a kill everything product or one that can be used near plants to be kept? If the latter and most of the tree still has live leaves, it could perfectly well get over it. After a time.

I have found that many new trees will loose their primary leaves from transplant shock or too much sun after being under shade cloth... MOST trees in summer or even spring in HOT areas are under shade closth before you get them... if you mail order that is one of the things you need to ask!!! Or it could just be lack of water during the hot summer months (the first year).. Then when they rebud and shoot secondaies they are so fragile and thin the sun blasts them... some should make it but will probably be sparce and deformed...that is my experience even up here.If it had leaves for lets say 3 months ( a guess btw) it should have stored enough energy to get it through til spring especially down there...and should be fine til next spring. If it is overwatered which I doubt but possible then it could be a more fatal thing causing root rot or crown damage...But I'd bet it is the former. David

Well I have solved the problem by relocating the "swamp maples" to the swamp! I had once known that red maples had this nickname but had forgotten. My guess now would be that this bundle of red maple trees was left out in the sun too long prior to packing, or otherwise stressed before shipping, rather than a problem with the conditions here. However from your reply, nhbabs, as well as a reply on the tree forum, it does seem likely that these trees still have a good chance of survival. The most insightful reply of all pointed out that the danger (whether real or perceived) to the horses was stressing me out and that the anxiety itself is a negative factor. So true! If I allowed the trees to stay and they made a comeback, the worry would continue to eat at me. Because I also hated the idea of throwing the trees on the fire if they might regenerate, the transplantation solution suggested itself. I plucked all six of them, donned mud boots, ventured out across the wetland area on the other side of the brook, and planted a little red maple grove in the corner of our property, far away from the horse pasture where they can harm no one. Perhaps one day they will raise their heads above the willow bushes and provide some nice autumn color that can be seen from the house. Or not. But whatever their fate, I feel like a burden is lifted from my shoulders. I decided to replace the red maples with white (paper) birch trees next spring, and I'm now much happier about the situation for both horses and trees! Thank you for the reply nhbabs. I did the same thing with my creeping evergreens and it killed them off. wasn't sure if that was it so tested another stake on a small evergreen which was doing poorly but thought I'd try, well it is dying off quickly now after the stake. Even though the directions say it is for your plant it is too much fertilizer in one area--beware!!

I killed a vine maple and a gorgeous Mountain Hemlock with those spikes (I believe - no other reason they would have died that i know of). Ugh... live and learn. Or actually they die and I learn.
