Shishigashira - brown tipped, curling leaves

I have a recently planted Shishigashira Japanese Maple, that's about 4 ft tall, in Smithfield VA. The soil was amended with some nutri-green compost, and it was not planted too deeply. Mulch was applied after planting. After about a month, the tips of the leaves started turning brown and curling. I have heard this could be wind burn, but I'm not certain. Any ideas? Is there anything that would help this?

Of course there could be numerous reasons but if I were a bettin man I'd put my money on sun damage ..I planted a similar sized one last year in alot of sun and it crisp'd pretty badly ...the leaves are crinkled and you'd think that might help make them more sun tolerant but no it doesn't ,,,of course it could be too much water or wind but I'd put my money on the sun from my experience ... especially in your area where it is probably getting pretty hot now unlike when ya planted it..you do not say whether it was planted sun or shade but with the rep of this tree taking sun I assume you planted in at least part to mostly sun ... My tree this year seems better as far as sun resistance although it was slapped hard by the freeze... I think as with most trees as it ages this crisping will subside except under extreeme hot summer conditions of which nothing is immmuned ...David

If I may I'd like to add that if what you describe is occuring only on new growth, a fungus problem like anthracnose could be the culprit.

I'm with david though that it could be several things but sounds like sun or hot drying wind to me if it is occuring on leaves that came out in spring.

I guess you're talking about K. blossfeldiana?? Perhaps you can Google that name and see if it's the same plant? It's amazing you got your Kal to bloom a second time so soon after the first. Normally, after they flower, then in order for this type of Kal to rebloom is by either giving it shorter days for six weeks or a few weeks of cold, and withholding water. I've never cut mine back, it'd be a great experiment. The only thing about the type that confuses me is you said its leaves are large. What do you consider large? If a leaf breaks just set it on soil and it'll root. Same with a stem. Well, if it's a stem, you're better off inserting the entire stem in soil. Are brown edges crispy or soft? Toni

Last fall I built a couple of raised beds in front of my house in which I placed ten Japanese Holly shrubs. I built the retaining walls of the beds with concrete blocks on a concrete foundation. I filled the beds with screened topsoil brought in from a local (Raleigh, NC) supplier. The holly plants seemed to be doing very well until a few weeks ago when I noticed the leaves on one of the shrubs were turning brown and curling. This symptom is now becoming apparent on shrubs adjacent to the worst affected plant. The bed that contains the sick plants is pretty shallow and therefore, of my two beds, is probably the most affected by lime leached from the new concrete and mortar from the bed walls. I will try the acid and iron treatment recommended in earlier postings. I intend to post results of the treatment in a future posting.

The biggest mistake I have made with newly planted maples in the past is to over-water them. Maples like moist soil, not wet soil. I would never water a maple every day. I would put mulch near (but not touching) the base of the tree and water about twice a week, even for newly planted trees. The great thing about maples is that they will rebound with fresh new leaves next spring. Also, they get more and more heat/sun tolerant each year they are in the ground. I have found it takes around 3 full growing seasons before they reach their peak heat/sun tolerance. -Brett

Manny, if you didn't water the soil and you've had over 100 degrees its possible you've stressed the roots? Can you find a place to put your tree where it gets a few hours of shade in the hottest part of the day...Mango trees love full sun...but 100 degrees for too long might cause the tree to over heat especially in a pot...if its very dry and hot...you might have to water the tree daily. If its in a free draining soil...you don't want to over water it either and over compensate since mango does not like "wet roots"...best bet is to give it some shelter like under some trees during the hottest part of the day...Morning sun is best when temps are over 100 degrees...Good luck!

It's probably just from transplanting. Give it a year at least. Burnt leaves during the first year isn't uncommon. A lot of these plants have been sitting in shaded greenhouses. They just need some time to adjust, but that's imo.

Has anyone used a "watering bulb" for their potted JM? I would like to get some for them to ensure proper watering.

Nope to the watering bulb. For the above poster, I agree that it isn't uncommon for transplant shock along with summer heat/stress, both.

I had the same thing happen last year to my Shishigashira. Missed one day of watering in sweltering hot weather...tree in full sun most of the day...brown and culry leaves. I now use a very well draining soil mix, keep it moderatly moist at all times (not wet) but I do water it well every few days in the hot weather and it sits in a partially shaded area that gets sun morning and afternoon for a few hours each. It lives in a pot on a concrete patio so I have to be very carefull. So far all is well but I may move it to a slightly shadier spot as the temp rises.
