Japanese Holly curling brown-tipped leaves

Hello everyone,

I am new to plants, and just planted my first group this past fall. I planted 4 japanese holly's about 4 feet apart. All has been fine until about 3 weeks ago when the outer leaves started to curl and turn brown on the tips. It appears to be spreading and the leaves all fall off when I run my hand up a branch. The inner leaves still are green but are just starting to show the same signs. We have had several nights of single digit temps in the last few weeks. I thought it was drought maybe (beginners guess) since the ground has been frozen for so long. We just go a huge rain storm a few days ago, but the plants are still progressing downward.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Gary
