Jap Maple bare spot

fatso

This year we had a 10w (low voltage) uplight put on a japanese maple over the winter, and have noticed that it is not leafing out in the area over the lighting (2 branches that are 2-3 ft above the light itself, which emits little heat). The rest of the tree is fine. I'm not sure if the branches in that area are dead and it's a coincidence, or if it's just being slow to leaf out. Is this a known condition w/Japanese maples? Japanese maples are uplit all the time, so it wouldn't seem like this is the problem, but I'm baffled as to what is causing it. Thanks.
