started noticing little brown marks on some of my hosta leaves,anyone tell me what it could be?

Is this spotting isolated to one plant?

When you disturb the leaves do you see aphids or gnats?

Tish, I talked to a HD employee a couple months back. She said HD stopped buying EA plants.. I believe Lowe's sells EA's. Before running to a Lowes, call first, to be sure. HD is cutting back like every other store. I'm sure the new nursery HD orders smaller plants offered a better wholesale deal. Succulents and cacti are grown in Canada. I browsed EA site before..HD, at least those here in IL, never had half the plants EA sells. Ever. HD sells the same plants, over and over. After a white it gets boring. lol. Gynura's are common, one time they even had a variegated, but I've never seen Bonnie, variegated or green. I found mine on Ebay. toni

Sounds as though you have it down. The only other things I can think of is the wait time after processing. In BWB, you remove the lid after the time is up, let sit for 5 more min. then remove the jars. I PC, you let the pressure drop. Then remove the weight or counterweight. Do not open the lid yet. Set timer for 10 min. then remove jars. Now, what are you going to can ?

What, No one wants to see the pictures? LOL LOL Lisa! thanks everyone ... I rememger waking up and asking the Doctor if I (my colon) was clean! lol He said, no! there are seeds! I said, don't know where they came from! LOL.. then I remember waking up in my little cubby! lol yeah, I had an externa and internal ultra sound, so nothing else to do with the fibroids unless they bother me, I guess. big test is on Tuesday.. the ct guided biopsy. that will be fun! lol

You will need to get the issue properly diagnosed before we can address the problem. Either through soil testing or by carefully removing the bark at the root collar area. If armillaria (honey fungus), there will be a white mycelial mat showing on the cambium. If it is armillaria, there's not a lot that can be done. There is no treatment available for this disease. But don't panic yet....get a confirmed ID. ETA: In case it is the armillaria, you want to disturb the soil as little as possible.

whats the ambient weather been like ....

something has broken single cells.. and that cell has browned.. simple as that ... the problem being.. figuring out what is is ...

mechanical???

fungal ... doubt it caused a hole.. its an after effect ...

bacterial.. see above ...

etc ...

i had such under an apple tree ... scab or something.. whatever ...

i seen something similar under trees that drop missiles..

i think some down south folks once argued for some bug ... which.. not living down south.. i did not commit to memory ..

its there for the season.. its not going to kill the plant.. so prevention for next year might be the issue ...

search for bugs.. morning . noon .. and night ....

i await others comments ...

never seen this damage before....it seems to be on the newer leaves off my 'sweet innocence' and to a lesser degree on a few others....its has been one of the driest spring/summers on record over here

Looks like what is commonly known as rust. A fungus that attacks damaged cells. It is recommended to remove the leaves once the plant goes dormant.

but.. but...

the fungus did NOT cause the holes.. and the fungicide will not fix the holes.. so whats the point.. just to expose yourself to the stuff???

what were those bugs.. which i doubt you have... beetles of some kind .... drat.. i will have to reanimate that brain cell ...

regardless .... the bugs were thirsty .. they bite a cell.. drink the liquid.. wonder off.. and the fungus takes the opportunity ....

find the bug.. PROPERLY ID IT... and act on that ... [of course.. they could be long gone]

by chance.. are these plants that in previous years were shaded by your lollipops???

are they all fragrant hosta.. like the one you named ... [not many hosta with sweet in the name.. that arent]

the damge only appeared in the last few weeks and only on the second flush of leaves

That confirms what Ken said about a bug leaving holes in the plant. If they are only on the newer more succulent leaves then it's some insect looking for a meal.

it took a few days.. but i think the southern bug was some kind of weevil ...

not that that gets us any further ... and i have no experience with them..

thanks for any help ken...but i know from past experiance about the dreaded vine weevil and i water at the start of every season with 'provodo' on everything in a pot as i know the damage these weevils cause over here...i still see a few adults about but they dont worry me now!...i feed them to the fish!..anyway getting back to the topic i did come across alot of knats the other night on the leaves and these might be the cause as there is no more damage as of yet...will have to do some more research...

slightly off topic,im going to spray with a garlic spray next season and see what that effect has on them,as im hearing alot of good things
